Selection guaranteed? Kota factory
Every year over 150,000 teenagers flock to Kota, “India’s coaching capital”. The city, in the northern state of Rajasthan, is crowded with billboards of frowning professors peddling their classes much like Bollywood stars endorse soaps. Hoardings show smiling freckle-faced teenagers proud of their top marks. Some of these coaches boast of “building beautiful minds”, but heap on the pressure by reminding readers that “it’s registration time”. Most pupils aim to ace the mind-bogglingly difficult entrance tests necessary to get into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology. Though few crack the exams, many crack under the pressure.
“Kota Factory”, a web-series on Netflix, highlights the travails of aspiring boys and girls as they go through the wringer. The programme’s second season was released on Netflix on Friday. In revealing the brutality of the process, “Kota Factory” is a refreshing take on how not to mint geniuses.

科塔工廠，選擇有保證？

工程師和醫生，是印度最受歡迎的兩個職業，要進入這兩個專業學習，那更是難上加難。
在高中選擇了科學方向（相當于中國的理科）的學生，如果有志于進工程學院，那就需要參加單獨的入學考試，鼎鼎大名的印度理工學院（IITs），就是印度最頂尖的工程學院，學生必須要通過JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) 考試才有望進入IIT。
如果有志于做醫生，那就需要參加 NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) 考試。
就像中國有毛坦廠，印度也有科塔鎮。
印度西北部拉賈斯坦邦的小鎮科塔，因為聚集了大量JEE和NEET補習班，被稱為“補習之都”。科塔起源于1985年，當時工程師VK Bansal連同他畢業于IIT的夥伴Maheshwari，開始嘗試不同的教學模式，在科塔為IIT考生教授數學和實體。
1995年，他們的教學方法取得巨大成功——49名學生考上IIT。科塔從此一戰成名，成為沖刺名校的首選地。

每年有超過15萬的青少年湧向“印度補習之都”科塔。這座位于拉賈斯坦邦北部的城市，擠滿了皺着眉頭的教授們的廣告牌，他們像寶萊塢明星代言肥皂劇一樣兜售自己的課程。廣告牌上展示了臉上長着雀斑的微笑少年以自己獲得高分而自豪。一些教育訓練老師吹噓能“培養聰明大腦”，而且通過提醒“現在是報名時間”讓讀者增加購買動力。大多數學生的目标是通過令人難以置信的高難度入學考試，進入著名的印度理工學院。很少有人能通過考試，許多人在壓力之下還是考砸了。

每年，約15萬備考生會湧入“印度版毛坦廠”，當地的聯考工廠科塔。
吸引這些考生的，是遍布在科塔這個印度北部拉賈斯坦邦城市中的各大輔導中心。如果他們順利通過這些輔導中心的入學考試，那麼在接下來的兩年内，圍繞輔導中心不大的生活半徑，這些17、18歲的學生将會度過緊張的備考時光。
這些湧入科塔的學生大多以印度頂尖工程和醫學院為目标。以一個希望考入印度理工 IIT 的考生舉例，他一天的日常将會全面圍繞學習展開：5-6小時的輔導課程+超過10小時的自習+6小時的睡眠+不到兩小時的時間用來吃飯和休息以便更好地學習。這所印度頂尖工程類院校的錄取率不到1%，錄取之難更甚于 MIT。
這些考生是大量印度年輕人的縮影：希望通過高度競争的考試，拿到通往未來職場的入場券。
