Zeng Mogong (1881-1961), zi mo gong, number ascetic, late trumpet wilderness old man, Sichuan Chengdu people. Before his death, he was a member of the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a librarian of the Sichuan Provincial Research Museum of Culture and History. There are two major reasons for Mr. Zeng Mogong's life, one is to practice medicine to help the world, to cultivate and read heirlooms, and the other is to devote himself to learning, not to make a name for himself, and to immerse himself in the ascetic path of cultural cultivation.
In terms of medicine, Zeng Mogong was born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine, and his father Zeng Hexuan was a famous Chinese medicine doctor in Chengdu. Since childhood, he studied medicine with his father, followed the ancestral precepts, "poetry, books, paintings, engravings, and medicine are five general studies, mainly agriculture", and received comprehensive training in old-style education. In 1908, Zeng Mogong graduated from the Sichuan Higher Normal School. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as a special physician of Chengdu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (now Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine), participated in the examination and approval of the "National Textbook of Traditional Chinese Medicine College", and wrote "Rheumatology" passed down to the world.
In terms of art, he aspired to the art of Jinshi calligraphy and painting, with remarkable achievements, more than 60 years of study and research, and his artistic achievements have been praised and admired by the intellectuals.
Seal engraving
In the 1920s, the seal altar was known as "Northern Qi, Eastern Wu, and Southwest Zeng", "Qi" was Qi Baishi, "Wu" was Wu Changshuo, and "Zeng" was Zeng. In 1916, after Wu Changshuo saw his calligraphy and painting seal engraving in Shanghai, he was very pleased, and the award was great, and he immediately gave the stone "Wudao Gancheng" (Bai wen); Qi Baishi commented on his seal: "The only one who has silently deleted all the habits of the ancients and stood on their own feet"; Wu Zuoren looked at his several square seals and exclaimed: "A generation of masters!" A generation of grandmasters! ”

In the arduous and long exploration of artistic life, he entered the seal with books, sought printing outside the seal, consulted the method of using the knife from the Zhong Ding inscription and the Qin brick Han tiles, and from the painting composition layout and the calligraphy and the qi zhang method, and finally formed his own unique art style of seal carving. His seal engraving works have the infinite charm of being majestic and powerful and ancient and graceful in the world of square inches.
Zeng Mo was good at borrowing from other art disciplines and used by me, his calligraphy had taught the "Three Gong Mountain Stele", "Tianfa Divine Stele", "Cuan Long Yan Stele", "Zheng Wen Gong Stele", etc., painting had studied Wang Yuanqi, Jin Nong, Shi Tao, Jia Yan, Huang Gongwang, Wu Changshuo and the Four Ren, a life of solitude, the artistic conception is high and ancient, the weather is magnificent, the aesthetic pursuit is ingenious, good at turning the ancient into the new, cleverly borrowing magic, so as to create a new peak of seal carving in Shuzhong Shangyi.

Guo Qiang, a famous calligraphy and seal engraving artist, once commented: "(Zeng Silent) raised a flag in Western Shu with a large seal carved in gold and stone imagery, echoing the sea capital. Variations are absolute, and taking methods is relative. Zeng silently used the Han official seal method, grafted the strangeness of the carved stone, transformed the strangeness of the ancient seal, the broad weather in the subtle, the heroic fake hand small movement, without losing the heroism. Painting
During the Republic of China period, foreign cultural imports such as missionaries, the wave of studying abroad, and the school-running movement were imported, and in the context of Westernization, some people put forward the "withering theory", "reform theory", "revolution theory" and "eclectic theory" for traditional painting. At this time, the paintings in the Prachuap Khiri Khan region were also in a state of collision and interweaving of closed and open. In this context, Zeng Silent, under the premise of not denying the revolutionary spirit of other people's art, from the perspective of deepening literati ink painting, wholeheartedly seeks self-reliance in the creation of traditional Chinese painting art.

In terms of painting, the landscape directly followed the Song and Yuan Dynasties and the four monks of the early Qing Dynasty; the flower and bird painters paid equal attention to writing, and the large freehand and heavy colored flowers were particularly good, and the special paintings of plums, orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums and pines, lotuses and Buddhas were painted, and the works were all naturally interesting.
Pan Tianshou, Deng Bai, Wang Bomin, He Tianjian, and others greatly admired Zeng Mo's painting skills and insights, such as Wang Bomin said in a letter to Zeng Mogong: "Mr. Mo Weng's predecessor: Zheng Hengjun returned to school from Shu and promised to give the masterpiece "Cangsong Tu", which is extremely gratifying and hereby thanks. Although the inscription in the picture is a few words, it is very enlightening to the evening, such as listening to the teachings and never forgetting it. Bin Weng died two years ago, Yi Lin lamented, but not many people knew his paintings, which was regretted. Shuchuan is a beautiful place, late yearning, tomorrow spring to Hexi, intend to take a detour. Then come and ask for advice. Please do so, please Chong'an. Late King Bo Min on. March 1st. ”

Calligraphy
Calligraphy is the foundation and key to Zeng's artistic creation, and the art of calligraphy has an obvious supporting role in his painting and seal engraving art.

The calligraphy that zeng meditated on started from the seal, from the pre-Qin to the Qin and Han dynasties, and then from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Tang and Song dynasties, and the famous scholars of the French calligraphy in the history of calligraphy for more than 2,000 years studied one by one. At the same time, every time he studied a book, he could achieve integration and flexibility, and never died to learn. He is good at the creation of broken books, the combination of seals, ancient and simple; the calligraphy is mixed with Wei monuments and his own intentions, solemn and thick; in the creation of calligraphy, he often juxtaposes several bodies, such as the use of Wei Kai to create with chapter cursive inscriptions, and the creation of seal books with matching book inscriptions.
Zeng Mogong once advocated the calligraphy concept of "teaching the Law of Han and Jin, and opening up the present with the past", coupled with his comprehensive cultivation in poetry, literature, books and paintings, his works are either presented in the form of hanging scrolls, or painted for landscapes, flowers and birds, or displayed in the form of fans, or used for the plaques of temple ancestral halls, or listed on stone tablets that can demarcate the boundaries of the land, all of which present a pattern of strong weather, strange intentions, thick dot paintings, and ancient clumsiness.

In 1941, the abbot of The Dingguang Temple in Huayang, the ancient name of Xichuan, Wanted to erect a "Dingguang Temple Monument" and a "Monument to the Statue of master Yinguang" for the temple, and asked the great scribe Zhao Xi to write it. Zhao Xi said, "Master Yin Guang is a contemporary monk and great master, and Master Hongyi Li Shutong wants to worship him as a teacher, and it took three times to answer." This stele must be written by someone with profound Buddhist cultivation to fit in. I have not studied Buddhism, and I recommend to you Mr. Zeng Mo of Chengdu, who is not only good at writing, but also good at Buddhism. "Zeng silently lived up to the expectations of the public, and won the honor of writing in a style of writing that integrated the true grass and seals, and became a good story in the book industry."

Although the calligraphy of Zeng Mozhi is little known, it is actually worthy of comprehensive and in-depth study. He once commented on himself: "I am the first in calligraphy, the second in painting, and the third in seal engraving." This is enough to show that he is very confident in his calligraphy achievements.
Socializing
Among them, famous ones include Xie Wuliang, Xu Beihong, Yi Junshi, Wu Changshuo, Zhang Daqian, Chen Zizhuang, Qi Liangkun (Qi Baishi's third son), and Qi Baishi is even cited as "God's Friendship".
In 1933, Peiping held the "National Exhibition of Indians", and the old man Qi Baishi admired his seal carvings after seeing them. The following year, his third son Qi Liangkun entered Shu, and the old man of Baishi painted a chrysanthemum, sent a photo, and inscribed on the back of the photo the words "Mr. Silent God Friendship Confidant And Longevity". Mr. Shiraishi wrote in the title "Doorman Luo Xiang ZhiYin Spectrum": "The only one who carved the seal today is to have silently deleted all the habits of the ancients and become self-reliant... Chengdu once silently made friends for Yu Shen. The old man of Baishi once painted an inscription poem for Zeng Mo: "Reading books and then knowing the paintings, but it is very different from the experts, deleting the tacky atmosphere of the moment, and can not do things to be Jinnong." He is likened to Jin Dongxin, the representative of the Eight Monsters of Yangzhou.

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Mr. Xu Beihong entered Shu and asked Zeng to silently engrave two seals in Chengdu: "Heavenly Idle Ten Thousand Horses are My Teachers" (Zhu Wen) and "Sorrowful Hong's Life is Hard" (Bai Wen). In the same period, the famous calligrapher and scholar Mr. Xie Wuliang, with the purchase of a newly discovered piece of the first Tuohan monument rubbings will be silently shared, friends meet, talk, immersed in it, happy, forget the hunger in the stomach, and then go to the street to eat grass and stomach, Mr. Wuliang quipped that "cold food hot soup is good taste", Zeng Silent replied: "Full eyes and hungry stomach is also fast." After the words were finished, the two would smile and say goodbye.

Zeng Mo bowed to Zhang Daqian at the age of sixteen, and his profound knowledge was deeply impressed by Zhang Daqian. Before liberation, Zhang Daqian often made fake paintings to sell to several great warlords in Sichuan, and when he saw Zeng Mo bending down to identify them, he hurriedly and respectfully said to Zeng Mo: "Elder Mo is knowledgeable and has a unique legal eye, please take more care of it." Zhang Daqian's "retro as a renewal" approach to painting may be related to the mutual improvement and inspiration of meditation in the "Shu learning" environment.
At the beginning of the 20th century, when China's intellectual elite vented all the problems of China's backwardness and beatings on Chinese culture, Chinese painting suffered the brunt of denial. The "feudal" non-revolutionary Chinese paintings, along with their painters, were swept out of the house, and it was not until the end of the 20th century that these buried old painters were rediscovered one by one, such as Wu Yifeng, Chen Zizhuang, Zeng Mogong and others in the Bashu region. After Mr. Zeng Mogong's death in 1961, most of his calligraphy and painting works were scattered during the Cultural Revolution, and nearly 400 square seals and three volumes have survived. It is a pity that almost no one knows about this all-rounder who combines poetry, books, paintings, prints, and medicine!
