Johnson, 49, said in an interview with Esquire, "I want to follow in his footsteps and be the next Bond." He also said he wasn't content to just star in one of the 007 films. He added with a smile: "I don't want to be a villain. I want to be Bond. Johnson's grandfather, Peter Maivia, is understood to have played a villain role in the 1967 film 007: Valley of Thunder who tried to kill Bond.

Craig played British agent James Bond for the fifth time in 007: No Time to Die, released last month. Since playing Bond in 2006 in 007: Casino Royale, Craig, 53, has been the face of 007.

If Johnson takes over the iconic film role, he will be the ninth actor in history to play Bond, a secret MI6 agent in history. (Editor: HHJ)
