Hu Qiaomu and Qiao Guanhua are both famous talents, one has the reputation of "one pen of the CCP" in the party, and the other shines in the diplomatic field. The two are fellow villagers, both from Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, who studied in Tsinghua and are of the same age (one was born in 1912 and the other was born in 1913).
Hu Qiaomu's original name was Hu Dingxin. In 1937, after following Feng Xuefeng to Yan'an, he changed his name to Qiaomu. The poem "Logging" reads: "Logging Ding Ding, birdsong, from the valley, moving to the trees". At the same time, he changed the name of his wife Li Guiying to "Gu Yu", which echoed Qiao Mu.

Qiao Guanhua, who is well-known in the diplomatic field and at the same time well-written, is also recognized as a "talented man" and "pen holder" within the CPC. In 1938, Qiao Guanhua came to Hong Kong to work in the "Evening News of Current Affairs". He did not want to use his real name to publish an article in the newspaper, so he took the pseudonym "Arbor". He believes that "he is tall and thin, resembling a tall tree."
During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Hu Qiaomu, as secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, often published articles in the Liberation Times in Yan'an under the pseudonym "Qiaomu". Hu Qiaomu's compatriot, Qiao Guanhua, who is also a native of Yancheng, published articles in the newspapers and periodicals under the pseudonym "Qiaomu" in the Hong Kong "Evening News of Current Affairs" in the south. At that time, people in the unknown thought that these two "trees" were one person, and there were many interesting things.
In order to distinguish between the two trees, people refer to the "tree" in Yan'an, that is, Hu Qiaomu, as "North Qiao", and the "qiaomu" in Hong Kong, that is, Qiao Guanhua, as "South Qiao".
In August 1945, after the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Hu Qiaomu, as an entourage of Mao Zedong, came from Yan'an to Chongqing to participate in the Kuomintang-Communist negotiations. Hu Qiaomu, who came to Chongqing, still published articles in Chongqing's Xinhua Daily under the pseudonym "Qiaomu". Qiao Guanhua was already an editorial board member of Xinhua Daily and the head of the newspaper's international review column, and he often published articles in Xinhua Daily under the pseudonym "Qiaomu". After the article was published, the reader could not figure out which article was "North Joe" and which article was "South Joe". Readers want one of the two of them to change his name so that it's easy for readers to discern whose article it is. However, neither of them wanted to give in.

When someone persuaded "Nan Qiao" Qiao Guanhua to change the name of "Qiaomu", he resolutely opposed it, saying that his original surname was Qiao, plus a height of 1 meter and 83 meters, just like a tall tree with a tree, worthy of the name, can not be changed.

Some people had to persuade "Beiqiao", that is, Hu Dingxin to change his name. Hu Dingxin said that the reason why he took the name of 'Arbor' after he arrived in Yan'an was that he was bent on being the pillar of the Chinese revolution. In addition, his wife's name Gu Yu also comes from the Book of Poetry, and the name cannot be changed.
When Mao Zedong, who was in Chongqing, learned of this incident, he personally intervened to mediate for the two men. After Mao Zedong judged The Northern Qiao Hu Dingxin, he added his surname before the name "Qiaomu" and changed it to "Hu Qiaomu". And "Nan Qiao" Qiao Guanhua was originally surnamed "Qiao", so he retained the original name of "Qiaomu".
South Joe left the surname, North Joe used the name. The Chairman's plan, which was impartial and not favoritistic, was gladly accepted by the two. Since then, the name dispute has come to an end.
