Why does Wu Kehua emphasize the toilet problem in marching operations? Life and death are a matter of life and death on the battlefield

Author: Hammer Jack

After the Lugou Bridge Incident in 1937, the all-out War of Resistance began. Wu Kehua, who was studying at the Kang Da, was transferred to the 5th Detachment of the Shandong Column of the Eighth Route Army as a deputy commander. Later, the first unit of the 5 detachments was merged with the Special Service Regiment of the Shandong Column to form the 2nd detachment, and Wu Kehua served as the leader of the detachment. In 1939, Wu Kehua was transferred to 5 detachments as the head of the detachment, and the political commissar was Gao Jinchun.

Wu Kehua only set out from Luzhong Qingtuo Temple in late March 1940 to the Jiaodong Military Region. In addition to the traffic battalion of the 5th detachment, there were also cadres and staff of 1 brigade and 5 teams sent by the first branch of the "Kang Da" in yimeng Mountainous Area, totaling more than 600 people. The purpose of this trip is to enhance the combat effectiveness of the 5 detachments under the jurisdiction of the Jiaodong Military Region. By late April, Wu and his party had arrived at the detachment's station, Zhaoyuan Chengnan.

Upon his arrival, Wu Kehua could not rest, and led his staff officers and cadres to the Chengguan area of Qixia County to reconnoiter, and learned the news that the traitor Zhao Baoyuan's department would carry out a "sweep" of the base area.

Wu Kehua decided to preemptively attack. On May 3, a group of Japanese troops in 3 cars tried to enter Chengguan, but were surrounded by Wu Kehua and violently attacked. After the Japanese army was surrounded, while resisting, they asked Zhao Baoyuan for help. In order to rescue this small group of Japanese troops, Zhao Baoyuan could only send out the "ace regiment" in his hand: Deng Xueliang's regiment, which had received a full set of Japanese training and equipment in "Pseudo Manchuria". With the support of mortar fire, the unit came at 5 detachments in a menacing manner. The main forces of the 5 detachments, with the cooperation of the 13th Regiment, fought fiercely with the Japanese puppet army for more than 10 hours and resolutely blocked the enemy.

In the face of the menacing and well-equipped puppet army, Wu Kehua resolutely issued the order to "put on the bayonet". After a close-quarters hand-to-hand combat, Deng Xueliang's regiment was killed and collapsed, and finally left the Japanese troops in the encirclement circle to slip away. In the end, our army achieved the result of killing and wounding more than a hundred enemy people, so that Zhao Baoyuan "lost his wife and folded his troops" and was scolded by the Japanese army.

Speaking of which, the predecessor of the 5 detachments was the "Shandong People's Anti-Japanese National Salvation Army" established in 1938. Although the ministry has participated in many battles before, there are still many problems that need to be solved in order to make this team a regular army that can fight. The main points are as follows:

First, the quality of the 5 detachments was very different from that of the old Red Army. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, many patriotic and intellectual youth chose to throw their pens into the army and fight in order to drive the Japanese army out of the country. Many of the cadres of the five detachments are students. There are many people who have studied for six or seven years before enlisting in the army, or who have been primary school teachers. Because they had not received systematic military training, these "Xiucai" cadres fought and flinched somewhat, and they were unable to meet Wu Kehua's requirements.

Second, although some "show talents" can write articles, their tactical level is not high, and there are many behaviors that do not meet the requirements of combat, and some even cannot understand the map.

Li Shaoqiao, commander of the 13th Regiment who came with Wu Kehua to the 5 detachments, also said: Some "Xiucai" commanders are not strong enough in their sense of military personnel, and their will to fight is somewhat weak. In the face of the frenzied Japanese soldiers, it is easy to waver.

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the various units of the Eighth Route Army paid more and more attention to the white-knife war with the Japanese puppet army. In close-quarters hand-to-hand combat, in addition to strength and skill, fearless courage and strong determination to fight are also required.

After Wu Kehua took office, although he led the troops to win the first battle, it did not mean that the troops were already on the right track. As soon as he had time, he would give a lecture to everyone. He told the officers and men: The first thing to get up every morning is to go to the toilet and untie your hands, not to go whenever you want.

Why emphasize this? Wu Kehua explained: In guerrilla warfare and movement warfare, the Eighth Route Army may be dispatched urgently at any time and anywhere. If you wait until the march and fight to solve the toilet problem, it will not only affect the speed of the troops' march, but also lead to individuals falling out of line, and even encountering the death of the enemy.

In addition, while replenishing the shortage of detachments, Wu Kehua stepped up the selection and training of cadres, and grasped both military and political affairs. In order to achieve the goal of "nine modernizations" (regularization of the main army corps, localization of local armed forces, organization of guerrillas, universalization of self-defense regiments, absolutization of leadership, tenacity of combat, active action, hardship of life, and seriousization of discipline) put forward by Xu Xiangqian, almost all large and small affairs in the five detachments must be approved by Wu Kehua at the beginning of his term of office. From the appointment of cadres in regiments, battalions and companies, down to the lives of soldiers, Wu Kehua will spare no effort to deal with them, just to make the 5 detachments a strong army.

According to the establishment of the "three-three system", the three regiments (13th, 14th and 15th regiments) under the jurisdiction of the 5 detachments were expanded into a main regiment of 3,000 people. In terms of the size of the regiment and detachment, the 5 detachments can definitely be regarded as the first in the Shandong Column of the Eighth Route Army. In 1940, for example, the Shandong column at that time had a total of 32,100 people, and a single 5 detachments accounted for one-third. It was also under wu Kehua's efforts that the 5 detachments were transformed from a single infantry unit into a regular army with professional detachments such as engineers, reconnaissance, communications, and cavalry.

In September 1940, the 5 detachments were reorganized into 5 brigades, and subsequently won many victories in the battles of Yangwangding and Mashishan and the subsequent anti-"sweeping" battles. In August 1945, after the Eighth Route Army issued a mobilization order to launch a general offensive against the Japanese army, the 5th Brigade fought the first battle, Jimo, and the second world war, annihilating nearly 10,000 pseudo-stubborn people in total. Of the 3 regiments under his command, the main force of the 13th Regiment was the famous "Jinan First Regiment"; while the 14th Regiment (the old 15th Regiment) was the "Tashan Garrison Hero Regiment", and the 15th Regiment (the old 14th Regiment) was the "Weixian Regiment", and its bloodline is still preserved in the order of our army. With such brilliant achievements, the old chief Wu Kehua was indispensable.
