On Wednesday, a decommissioned Staten Island ferry sold for more than $280,000 at an auction hosted in New York City, a ferry that has been in service for more than 50 years.

According to 1010wins, the John F. Kennedy Ferry was once the oldest surviving vessel in the Staten Island Ferry fleet, and it has been transporting commuters between Staten Island and Manhattan since it was launched in 1965.

According to the New York City Administrative Services, the lucky bidder, code-named "Pitalia211," beat out 36 other contenders in a Wednesday night bid to buy the ferry for $280,100. The department warned in the list that the ship's machinery and equipment were in poor condition and had to be decommissioned due to mechanical problems.

Last week, the 277-foot-long, 4.2 million-pound vessel went on auction for $125,000.
