In 1860, Gordon, a British soldier in a "yellow coat". When the Taiping Rebellion broke out, Li Hongzhang, the governor of Jiangsu at the time, invited Gordon to lead a team of foreign guns to assist the Qing army in fighting the Taiping Army. At the end of the war, the Tongzhi Emperor conferred on Gordon the title of "Admiral" and rewarded him with a yellow coat and a flower plume.

However, Gordon's later personal relationship with Li Hongzhang was not good, because he opposed the killing of the surrender (the eight descending generals of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom led by Gao Yongkuan) and also quarreled with Li Hongzhang. He threatened Li Hongzhang to betray his faith and went to Li Hongzhang's military camp with a gun to seek trouble, and for a time Chinese and foreign public opinion aimed the spearhead at Li Hongzhang.
