According to the United Nations (UN), more than 1.7 million civilians fled Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion.

The European Union (EU) says as many as 4 million people may try to leave and will welcome refugees "with open arms".

So far, the United Nations has stated:

  • Poland received 1,027,603 refugees
  • Hungary 180,163
  • Moldova 82,762
  • Slovakia 128,169
  • Romania 78,977
  • Russia 53,300
  • Belarus 406

According to the United Nations, more than 183,000 people have been transferred from these countries to the rest of Europe.

How do refugees leave Ukraine?

In cold weather, many people waited a long 60 hours before entering Poland. People entering Romania have been waiting for up to 20 hours.

Many people are unable to board the train leaving Ukrainian cities.

Refugees were told they did not need documents, but it was advisable to have domestic or foreign passports, birth certificates of children travelling with them, and medical documents.

To obtain refugee status, they need Ukrainian citizens or people who are legally residing in Ukraine, such as foreign students.

How have countries helped?

In Poland and other countries bordering Ukraine, refugees can stay in reception centers if no friends or relatives live together. They receive food and medical care.

Poland is also preparing medical trains to transport injured Ukrainians.

Hungary and Romania are providing cash subsidies for food and clothing. Local schools are allocating places for children.

The Czech Republic will allow refugees to apply for special types of visas to stay.

Poland and Slovakia have asked the EU for help in providing refugees. As a result, Greece and Germany are shipping tents, blankets and masks to Slovakia, while France is shipping medicines and other medical equipment to Poland.

The European Union is preparing to grant Ukrainians fleeing the war full rights to stay and work in 27 countries for up to three years.

They will also receive social benefits, as well as housing, health care and children's education.

How many Ukrainians have been internally displaced?

The United Nations estimates that at least 160,000 people fleeing the war in Ukraine have been displaced in their home countries.

The EU believes that this number could climb to 7 million, while 18 million Ukrainians will be affected by the war.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said it was working to help internally displaced persons, but the war had made it insecure for aid workers.

The United Nations is preparing to provide assistance in the more accessible western part of Ukraine.
