I'm not a "stupid kid" and it's not my fault for low scores

author:Shenzhen Satellite TV

"Reading is probably the lowest threshold noble act in the world."

You can open a book and enter another world at any time and any place if you want, which is our luck. But there is a group of people who cannot experience the joy of reading.

The picture above is not garbled, it is the real world in the eyes of a special group of people who are "dyslexia". The biggest difficulty with dyslexia is that it is impossible to read the language. An ordinary book, in their eyes, is like this:

  • "Words run wild and can only be read intermittently";
  • "The words on the book flash and flash, one black and one white";
  • "The words are all inverse, sometimes crowded together";
  • ......

This deficiency is usually not gradually discovered until after the school age begins to standardize reading and writing.

April 23 is the 27th World Book Day and the 7th Shenzhen Book Day for Minors. When the whole people were talking about the fun of reading and enjoying the joy of reading, Xiaobian invited Professor Yang Bin rang, director of the Children's Health and Mental Health Center of Shenzhen Children's Hospital, to talk again about the children who were troubled by reading.

I'm not a "stupid kid" and it's not my fault for low scores

Many people may have first learned the new term through a movie called "Stars on Earth" or the CCTV documentary "I Am Not a Stupid Child.": "Dyslexia."

In fact, dyslexia is not uncommon, with a probability of occurring in English-speaking countries ranging from 2% to 10%. Professor Yang Bin Rang introduced that in China, about 5% to 8% of school-age children have dyslexia, which is equivalent to 5-8 children with dyslexia for every 100 students. At present, there is no agreement in the academic community on the concept and theoretical interpretation of dyslexia. The recognition of dyslexia is more consistent, which means that due to the influence of some complex genetic factors and environmental factors, although some children have normal intelligence, emotions and corresponding educational and social and cultural opportunities, they will have special learning difficulties in reading, and their reading level often lags behind that of children of comparable age and intelligence.

Invisible obstacles

Professor Yang Bin Rang introduced that "dyslexia" is a specific type of learning disability, which may coexist with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADHD) in childhood, and both may have difficulty concentrating (dyslexia is more manifested in reading), slow information processing, poor academic performance and other common symptoms, which are very easy to lead to confusion among parents. Many children with ADHD have many academic problems due to their attention deficit, hyperactivity and other problems that affect their learning effectiveness. These problems improve as children's concentration improves, but dyslexia is an "invisible disorder" whose reading ability is much lower than their level of intellectual ability.

If ignored for a long time, the more severe the impact on reading development and self-esteem. Therefore, it is important for parents to recognize the difference between ADHD and dyslexia, early detection of dyslexia and appropriate intervention.

Identify the "little monster" in this way

As a parent, how to find out and preliminarily judge that the child is not a "stupid child", nor is it a poor learning attitude, and it is likely to suffer from "dyslexia"? Professor Yang Bin rang gave the following preliminary judgment conditions:

When children appear to be unable to read words accurately or slowly and laboriously

Can be read accurately but difficult to understand what is being read

Frequent mispronouncies and mispronouncies

It takes a child 10 minutes to read a short essay that another child can read in 2 minutes...

When the above situation occurs, parents should pay attention to the child's reading ability and take the child to the hospital for professional testing as soon as possible.

I'm not a "stupid kid" and it's not my fault for low scores

The documentary "I'm Not a Stupid Kid" simulates what people with print disabilities see

May be accompanied by a lifetime of ≠ no solution

While it may last a lifetime, the dilemma of dyslexia is not insoluble. For example: adjust the font size and spacing on the book, establish a word card library; parent-child reading, convert text into audio to tell children, change the way of reading, give children more time when reading, and so on. Special learning support, changes in the settings of the environment... These can help children overcome the impact of dyslexia to a certain extent.

But for children with dyslexia, the most important role is undoubtedly that of a parent. Parents should unconditionally accept and support their children, and help their children build confidence in accepting and recognizing themselves.

On the occasion of this year's World Book Day, Professor Yang Bin asked Professor to recommend several classic books for parents, such as: "Out of the Maze: Understanding Developmental Dyslexia", "I Am Not a Stupid Child", especially "Out of the Maze: Understanding Developmental Dyslexia" The book not only talks about theoretical knowledge, but also shares many intervention methods that parents can operate at home. In addition, the book also pays attention to the importance of home-school cooperation for children's reading ability development.

All in all, only by adjusting the state of parents, calming the mentality, and the children's united front can we fight this protracted battle.
