author:Chiba Bodhi

The Gyomin Shokudo restaurant in Itoman, Okinawa, Japan, was designed by Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop. The aim is to support and promote local traditional culture through restaurant cuisine.

Gyomin Syokudo's façade looks rather pristine, and since local fishermen often use Ryukyu limestone to build their own fishing grounds, the restaurant's theme building also uses this material and craftsmanship, and is assisted by local workshop students. The construction of the building was proudly completed with this ancestral technique.

The restaurant's base is above the ground, and there are sunken garden courtyards at the two entrances, which include three private rooms, a japanese room and a common area. Most of the buildings are directly connected outdoors, which plays a good ventilation effect, and the thick volcanic rock wall and single-layer roof panels shield the hot sunlight of Okinawa.
