On May 20, the Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Conference was held in Guangzhou, and the conference awarded the 2020 Guangdong Science and Technology Award. Professor Li Sheng of the School of Life Sciences of South China Normal University won the first prize of the 2020 Guangdong Science and Technology Award natural science award as the first person to complete the project "Hormone and Nutritional Regulation of Insect Metamorphosis".
This is the second time that South China Normal University has won the first prize of the Guangdong Science and Technology Award in 8 years, and it is also the third in the history of the university.
The award-winning project solved the two scientific problems of "up to 80 years of mystery of juvenile hormone receptors" and "insects cannot grow when molting, cannot molt when growing", established a theoretical model of "hormone and nutritional regulation of insect metamorphosis", and relevant representative papers were published in famous international journals, and original, pioneering and systematic results were achieved in the research direction of hormone and nutrition regulation of insect metamorphosis, laying an international leading position and leading the development of the discipline. It provides an important theoretical basis and technical support for pest control and beneficial insect utilization.
Professor Li Sheng has been engaged in insect science and technology research for a long time, and in 2016, he worked full-time in South China Normal University, and founded the Institute of Insect Science and Technology of South China Normal University, the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Insect Developmental Biology and Application Technology, and the Guangdong Guangmeiyuan Insect New R&D Institution. In recent years, Professor Li Sheng's team has twice been invited to write a review in the authoritative review journal of insect science, introducing the original achievements related to hormone and nutritional regulation of insect metamorphism, reflecting the international leading position in this field.
