1. What is an emergency lane?
Emergency lanes, also known as life passages, refer to lanes that are drawn on both sides of highways, urban expressways and urban ring roads, and are specially used for emergency vehicles such as engineering rescue, fire rescue, medical rescue or police to perform emergency duties.
According to Article 82 of the Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China, motor vehicles driving on highways shall not drive or stop in the emergency lane during non-emergency situations.

2. Under what circumstances can I use the emergency lane?
1. Wait for rescue
When the vehicle has a traffic accident or sudden breakdown and needs to stop and wait for rescue, the vehicle can be parked in the emergency lane, and the hazard warning flashing lights can be turned on at the same time, and a warning sign is placed 150 meters away from the direction of the incoming vehicle to warn the rear oncoming vehicle.
Relevant personnel should immediately evacuate to the guardrail and call the police to wait for rescue. Keep in mind that "the car pulls over, people evacuate, and the police are called".
2. Sudden illness
Passengers in the vehicle can use the emergency lane in the event of a sudden life-threatening illness.
3. Urgent tasks
Police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and engineering rescue vehicles can be used when performing emergency tasks.
3. What are the hazards of occupying the emergency lane?
1. Delay in emergency rescue
Occupying the emergency lane will block the vehicles performing emergency tasks such as rescue, and will not be able to arrive at the scene in time to deal with accidents, clear dangers, guide and rescue the wounded, and even cause serious consequences for the death of the wounded and patients due to lack of timely treatment.
2. Exacerbate road congestion
When a traffic accident occurs in front or encounters a lot of cars driving slowly, some drivers go back and forth in the emergency lane and the driving lane, add congestion, and constantly change lanes, interfering with the normal traffic flow and aggravating the congestion.
3. It is easy to cause traffic accidents
After some vehicles break down on the highway, they directly park their cars in the emergency lane for maintenance, and some drivers park their cars in the emergency lane to rest when they are tired. The above-mentioned behavior can easily cause the vehicle in the same direction to take braking measures without knowing the situation ahead, resulting in accidents such as collisions.
