The Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Library (Institute of Information of the Guangdong Academy of Sciences) (hereinafter referred to as "Guangdong Science and Technology Library") is a national popular science education base, and the Guangzhou Children's Library is a national first-class library and a national "national reading base". Both libraries have achieved remarkable results in youth services, having established branches before 2007, but their business systems have not been connected.
This time, the Guangshaotu Science Branch Library was "renewed" and upgraded during the "Guangzhou Reading Month", so that the more than 40,000 children's collections of the Science Branch Library that mixed Yueke and Guangshaotu broke the silos of the information system and officially integrated into the "borrowing and returning" service network of the Guangzhou Public Library, realizing the "borrowing and returning" in the city's public library service system, opening up the "last mile" of public cultural services, and truly meeting the reading needs of minors to the greatest extent.
Located in the children's popular science reading room on the third floor of the courtyard, No. 100 Xianlie Middle Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, the library covers an area of about 350 square meters, with a picture book library and a reading area for teenagers, with a collection of more than 40,000 books, rich in genres, covering popular science, Chinese and English picture books, children's literature and other genres, and has been awarded the "Most Beautiful Children's Reading Space" in the 2020 "4.2 International Children's Book Day" and "Guangzhou Reading Month".
Pop-up books stimulate children's curiosity
As one of the supporting activities of the launching ceremony, Guang Shaotu's "Understanding Guangzhou" brand activity was also exported to the Science Branch Library this time. On the day of the launching ceremony, the bridge of Guangzhou of "Understanding Guangzhou" was held in the Yueke activity room on the third floor of Yueketu.
In 1933, where did the only steel bridge in China that could be opened and closed? What is the bridge with a unique bridgehead? Which bridge is as beautiful as a harp and plays the movement of the Pearl River? Huang Miaoling, a teacher from the Guangzhou Road Affairs Center, leads young readers to explore the world of bridges, understand the mystery of road and bridge design, and feel the charm of the Pearl River through easy-to-understand professional explanations.
Another supporting activity of the launching ceremony, "Pop-up Book Appreciation", opened the children's minds and amazed. When the ancient Chinese armillary sphere and spring flowers suddenly appeared in front of the children's eyes, the children's exclamations were endless.
Wu Cuihong, director of the Professional Committee for Minors Services of the Guangdong Library Association, deputy director of Guang Shaotu, and deputy captain of the "Seedling Guangzhou" Children's Reading Promotion Professional Volunteer Service Team, told a story about flowers to the young readers. As the story is told, the little book magically transforms into a "big and beautiful yellow sunflower".
Then, Sister Yanzi, a member of the "Seedling Guangzhou" Children's Reading Promotion Professional Volunteer Service Team and a librarian of Guang Shaotu, carefully guided the children to appreciate and analyze three-dimensional books such as "China Springs" and "Havoc in the Heavenly Palace", and used books as a medium to tell Chinese stories.
In the Yueke activity room on the third floor, Guang Shaotu set up a pop-up book micro-exhibition, with more than 10 kinds of pop-up books with different themes of natural science, classic literature, history and culture, so that children and parents were amazed and amazed.
Flipping and pulling, vivid three-dimensional scenes, delicate and ingenious interactive mechanisms, and pop-up books rich in artists' whimsy and extraordinary creativity stimulate children's curiosity to explore knowledge and make them feel the joy and charm of reading.
