On April 13, Southern University of Science and Technology held the 2024 Campus Open Day. The event was presented offline and online simultaneously, attracting 12,000 students, parents and people from all walks of life who are interested in SUSTech to enter the campus and participate in a series of on-site activities. At the same time, about 500,000 people watched the live broadcast of the event online. The reporter learned from the event that the number of students planned to enroll SUSTech this year has increased slightly, and the enthusiasm for applying for the examination is expected to reach a new high.
The open day activities were held at the same time in the main venue and branch venues, including SUSTech innovation and development report, "Fields Medal" winners' sharing, president-dean dialogue, introduction to the college tutor system, sharing of outstanding graduates, interpretation of enrollment policies, popular science lectures by academicians, on-site displays of colleges and departments, visits to laboratories and campus facilities, art exhibitions, and admissions presentations of the United Medical College, leading visitors to have a glimpse of the unique style of this new research university.
After Jiang Hong, Secretary of the Party Committee of SUSTech, delivered a welcome speech, President Xue Qikun made a report on the innovation and development of SUSTech with "Meet SUSTech to Create the Future Together". He talked about the growth foundation of SUSTech relying on the major national strategic deployment and urban location advantages, and comprehensively introduced the latest development and future prospects of SUSTech from three aspects: first-class university construction, talent training characteristics, and top-notch talent training prospects, and demonstrated the school's running characteristics and achievements. Focusing on SUSTech's top-notch talent training measures, Xue Qikun proposed that in order to answer the "question of a hundred years of education", SUSTech has established a "three-step" medium and long-term development plan, "three development strategies" and "five action plans" with talent training excellence plan as the core. In view of the implementation of the Talent Cultivation Excellence Plan, the university has created a new model of collaborative education between colleges and departments, aimed at major scientific problems, formed a new model of collaborative education between disciplines and big science platforms, integrated schools and enterprises to explore a new education model with deep interaction between universities and social development, and implemented the "Academic Promotion Plan" for undergraduates to support students' independent scientific research. Through "Knowledge", we will train scientists who explore major scientific problems, through "innovation", we will train engineers who will solve key core technical problems, and through "Entrepreneurship", we will cultivate entrepreneurs who will master original hard technologies.
The campus open day attracted 12,000 people to experience the campus, and the activities were very popular. While touring the picturesque campus, students and parents can also experience unique branch activities throughout the campus. On that day, the school library, the museum center and the college activity area were open for guided tours. Laboratories in 17 disciplines, including the Cryo-EM Center, the Low-Dimensional Magnetic Laboratory, the Artinx Robot Team of SUSTech, the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Robot Perception and Intelligence, the Life Science Laboratory of the Analysis and Testing Center, and the Physical and Chemical Platform Laboratory, are also open to the public, allowing everyone to experience the style of cutting-edge science and technology of SUSTech at zero distance.
In an interview with reporters, Tan Jianwei, director of the admissions office of SUSTech, said that the registration for SUSTech's 2024 comprehensive evaluation enrollment was launched in December last year, and most provinces will close on April 30. So far, the number of online applicants has reached 40,000, and the final number of applicants is expected to exceed last year's 58,000 to about 60,000. This year's enrollment will be slightly higher than last year's, with a planned enrollment of 1,350 students, of which 320 will be enrolled in Guangdong Province.
"In recent years, with the rapid development of the school, SUSTech's enrollment has been rising, and it has also attracted more and more outstanding students," Tan Jianwei said, adding that the biggest change in SUSTech's enrollment this year is that candidates must take both physics and chemistry before they can apply for the school. In addition, this year's enrollment majors will be new accounting and industrial engineering, and the King's College London School of Medicine of Southern University of Science and Technology will also enroll students for the first time, planning to recruit biomedical science (Sino-foreign cooperative education) and biomedical engineering (Sino-foreign cooperative education) in seven provinces, including Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Shandong, Henan, and Hunan.
