We all love surprises – like finding a wrong one-dollar coin between the couch cushions, or waking up to find that the alarm is still a few hours away.

These are all good things, and there's another: when your plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) can easily beat its official electric mileage by a wide margin. This is the case with the 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge, the first of many surprises spotted in testing in the last week.

Fuel economy: 9.5/10

The first time I unplugged the XC60 Recharge, it showed an electric range of 67 km, exceeding the official estimate of 58 km. But here's the real surprise: in highway and city stop-and-go traffic, the XC60 travels more than 70 kilometers more than 70 times before switching to petrol power.

This meant that the engine was unusable for several days on end, and this Volvo was like a real electric car. Later this week, I needed to travel from Hamilton, Ontario to and from Detroit with no convenient recharge, and the XC60 still had an overall average fuel consumption of 7.7 l/100 km. This is better than its official 8.5-liter combined fuel consumption.

Power: 8.5/10

Despite the Volvo's impressive efficiency, the slightly larger Lexus RX 450h+ is more fuel-efficient, but it also has a relatively mediocre driving experience in comparison. The Lexus RX 450h+ features a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, while this XC60 pairs a turbocharged engine with an electric motor that makes 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque.

On the road, when the throttle is pressed to the bottom, it creates a rather exciting impact in the rear. The XC60 Recharge jumps quickly from a standstill in a typically electric fashion, utilizing a standard all-wheel drive system to aid traction, but what really impresses is the immediacy of its overtaking dynamics at cruising speeds.

It's worth noting that my test car also came with the Polestar Engineering Optimisation Suite, which adjusts the software to improve the responsiveness of the throttle and gearbox, as well as more power in the mid-range. It's a $1,400 option, and it's worth the price for those who appreciate the power of a PHEV. [Try to say it 10 times quickly – ed.] ]

Driving Feeling: 8/10

The XC60's achievements aren't limited to straight-line speed. Even though it's a tall SUV, its handling is smooth enough and it's quite fun to drive when going uphill and on some country road bends without worrying about seasickness. The steering is also precise enough to keep the driving pleasure despite the lack of road feel.

Comfort: 7/10

I haven't experienced a Swedish car without a great seat, and that's the case with this XC60. The Volvo seat is sturdy and supportive, perfectly shaped to prevent any pain or discomfort after a long drive, and it works well.

Unfortunately, the XC60's suspension lacks flexibility, and the large 21-inch wheels and sturdy, high-performance tires aren't good for the suspension either. Dynamically, Volvo's suspension is the only real drawback compared to its German rivals, which perform better in terms of driving experience and handling. (This test car comes with optional air suspension, which makes me wonder how bad the standard settings are.) )

Practicality: 7/10

As a compact crossover, the XC60 is quite spacious, with plenty of headroom and legroom in the front and rear. The rear seats can seat three people, but the middle seat will be cramped for an adult – as is the case for all models in this category.

The XC60's cargo space is reasonable for a family outing, but in terms of numbers, it's significantly smaller than the BMW X3 (468 litres vs. 770 litres). With the rear seats folded, the space can be expanded to a more practical 1,395 litres, but again behind the most spacious rivals. Of course, this may be due to the different measurement standards used by different brands.

Safety: 9/10

Unsurprisingly, the XC60 maintains Volvo's reputation for safety, earning a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a top safety choice from the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It achieves this not only with its rugged construction, but also with a host of advanced safety features that come as standard, including lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and digital alerts when entering an intersection or reversing out of a parking space, to find and respond to anything that might be coming your way towards Volvo.

Features: 8/10

As a high-end car, the XC60 Recharge comes with fancy features like heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, and even a clever air purifier that can help keep allergens out of the cabin. The sound system plays music through 15 speakers with more than 1,400 watts of power, and the sound is powerful, bright and crisp. In addition to this, there is touch-free tailgate operation, and the entire interior is mostly rich in textures and materials.

User-friendliness: 7/10

The cockpit layout of the XC60 is essentially the same as most models in the current Volvo range. The digital instrument display can be configured with a variety of information, including integrated navigation. The vertically oriented main touchscreen uses Google's built-in automotive operating system, which was one of its earliest implementations. While AutoTrader Editor-in-Chief Jodi Lai recently had some glitches while testing the V60 Recharge, just like the XC40 I drove a few months ago, the system worked smoothly during my time driving this XC60.

The loud volume knob is a welcome feature, while integrating most of the climate system functions and heated seat buttons into the infotainment system is cumbersome.

Styling: 8.5/10

The current XC60 debuted in 2017 and received a minor facelift in 2021. In automotive terms, this should be an old-school model, but the XC60 still looks fresh and modern today – thanks to the clean, well-proportioned design language that the brand relies on.

My test unit has Ultimate trim and comes with a Black Edition package that adds unique 21-inch black wheels, and all the trim (including the Volvo badge) is also blacked out to make this machine look cool.

The interior design is equally outstanding. The 9-inch screen in the center is small by modern standards, but that doesn't diminish the overall upscale feel of the interior, which is graced by the test car's sleek crystal shift lever and wood accents.

Value: 7/10

The XC60 Recharge starts at $63,389, but the configuration is rather rudimentary. Opt for the Black Edition kit and the price immediately increases by $24,000, adding not only sinister styling, but also a bunch of bits and pieces of optional items on the base model.

The car I tested has a pre-tax price of over $90,000 and is in direct competition with the fully equipped X3 PHEV or even the larger Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e. Volvo's straight-line performance is better than both cars, and its electric range is significantly longer than that of BMW, but worse than that of Mercedes.

verdict

Despite its high price, the XC60 Recharge is still a very competitive product in this segment. Buyers agree with this, with recent Volvo sales figures showing double-digit sales growth over last year, with the XC60 being the most popular model. In fact, Volvo's Canadian website currently shows that all 2024 cars have been sold, which means buyers will need to wait until 2025 to get their own cars.

After spending a week trying the 2024 Volvo XC60 Recharge, I got it. It's a sleek, best-of-both world-of-both worlds SUV that, thanks to electrification, has a truly usable range and boosted power, while also enabling stress-free long journeys when needed. It's a comfortable, easy-to-live luxury crossover that continues to maintain strong appeal in an increasingly diverse market segment.
