After defeating Panama and Bolivia, Uruguay advanced to the knockout round with two consecutive wins, becoming the third team to advance to the knockout round after Argentina and Venezuela.
In the first round of the group stage, Uruguay defeated Panama 3-0 to become the team with the most goals in the first round. Bielsa made only one change to the starting line-up compared to the first game, with De La Cruz getting a chance to start.

In the 29th minute, Nunez's header hit the crossbar. In the 77th minute, De La Cruz went straight, and Maximiliano Araujo burst into the penalty area with a low right-footed shot, 3-0! Maximiliano Araujo also scored in his first two Copa America games.
In the 81st minute, Valverde shared the ball, Pellistri crossed, Valverde pushed the goal, 4-0! In the 89th minute, Bentancur scored with a header in the small penalty area, 5-0!
After the victory over Bolivia, Chile advanced to the knockout stage with two consecutive wins, becoming the third team to qualify early. It was Uruguay's first Copa America win since 1995 with two consecutive wins, with back-to-back victories over Venezuela and Paraguay.
Since 14 July 2001, Uruguay have won all of their matches against Bolivia in the Copa America, winning four in a row and conceding a clean sheet.
After scoring eight goals in two group games, Uruguay have become the team with the most goals in this Copa America. In the World Preliminary Tournament, Uruguay defeated Argentina and Brazil, and Brazil drew with Costa Rica in the first game, Uruguay has replaced Brazil and become Argentina's number one opponent in defending the title.
After the 2016 Copa America group stage, Uruguay reached the knockout stage in the next two Copa Americas, but was also eliminated by Peru and Colombia in the quarterfinals.
