The change of No. 17 was made possible by the renewal of the West Shobu neighborhood. In 2019, Beijing introduced an application-based lease surrender, allowing residents to apply for better living conditions if they wish. In September 2021, the application-based rent surrender and restorative construction project of directly managed public housing in Xizongbu Block was launched. This is the first batch of application-based lease surrender projects implemented by municipal state-owned enterprises in Beijing, and it is also the first project in Dongcheng District to be launched and implemented at one time with block renewal units as a unit.

In addition to the houses that retain residents, the other spaces are planned to be operated as public art spaces and commercial spaces. "In the future, when the courtyard door is opened, citizens and tourists will be able to walk into the courtyard and feel the charm of the old alley." Zhang Mengshuo said.

With a history of nearly 800 years, the Xizongbu neighborhood has witnessed the transformation of the city of Beijing and the aging of housing infrastructure, and the rejuvenation of these three pilot courtyards is just the beginning. In accordance with the principle of "voluntary consultation, equal consultation, fairness and openness, and moderate improvement", up to now, 758 residents of the project have completed the lease surrender contract, and will promote the formation of 50 whole hospitals.

"According to the distribution characteristics of the courtyard 'multi-area + multi-scattered', we have sorted out the current situation of the courtyard, and have selected more than 20 high-quality courtyards as the first phase of the courtyard. Zhang Mengshuo said that in the future, the Xizongbu block will gradually carry out the "acupuncture" renewal of the courtyard, and take the Xizongbu Hutong as the development axis to explore a new model of the renewal of the old city block from four aspects: activating historical and cultural resources, reshaping the vitality of street and lane space, enhancing the overall image of the city, and serving the core functions of the capital.

The relevant person in charge of Jianguomen Street said that the three pilot courtyards each have a unique architectural style and historical context, representing three different functional attributes of community housing, the whole courtyard and the symbiosis courtyard. The mutual tolerance of tradition and modernity will bring more vivid fireworks to the old city.
