Mid-size family SUVs are big business in Australia, accounting for the lion's share of all new car sales, even more than the ubiquitous utility vehicles.

Or to put it another way, if you want to be a big player, you have to have a midsize SUV that is popular.

Toyota's RAV4, Mazda's CX-5, Kia's Sportage, Mitsubishi's Outlander, and Hyundai's Tucson are now household names, but let's not forget that Nissan has also recently updated its X-Trail lineup, offering more technology and more space than ever before, but the price has gone up accordingly.

If you're looking for your family's next car, is the Nissan X-Trail worth considering?

How much does Nissan X-Trail cost?

The Nissan 2024 X-Trail lineup features 11 different models that cover two powertrains, five- and seven-seat forms, and front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations.

Prices start at $37,250 for the entry-level petrol-powered ST front-wheel drive five-seater (excluding on-road fees) and $57,690 for the Ti-L e-Power hybrid, but we're testing a non-hybrid all-wheel-drive Ti five-seater here.

Powered by a 135kW/245Nm 2.5-litre petrol engine, the Ti is the penultimate X-Trail model after the Ti-L, which means its list of standard equipment is long.

Starting with the entry-level ST, the X-Trail includes equipment such as an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 7.0-inch driver's display, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, fabric upholstery, keyless entry, push-button start, a reversing camera with rear parking sensors, and power-folding heated mirrors.

Upgrading to the ST-L tier, buyers can enjoy 18-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a leather steering wheel, heated front seats, front parking sensors, a surround-view monitor, rear privacy glass, and Nissan's ProPilot semi-autonomous driving technology.

However, the Ti we have here adds 19-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, a larger 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.8-inch head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger, automatic wipers, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, a power tailgate, digital mirrors, and LED indicators.

However, it's important to note that Nissan doesn't have the cooled front seats found in Hyundai and Toyota models, and even upgrades to the flagship X-Trail Ti-L (AU$53,490) don't add this feature.

For most home buyers, though, the X-Trail Ti's configuration is more than sufficient, which includes the most convenient features like a power tailgate, three-zone climate control, and a rear door that opens nearly 90 degrees.

Optional features include metallic paint (available for an additional $700), a contrasting black roof (available in certain metallic paint colours only) for an additional $500 and complimentary light grey leather upholstery.

How big is the Nissan X-Trail?

With a length of 4680 mm, a width of 1840 mm, a height of 1725 mm, and a wheelbase of 2705 mm, the X-Trail has an advantage over the popular CX-5 and RAV4.

The wheelbase is 5mm and 15mm longer than Mazda's and Toyota's competitors, respectively, and while it may not be much on paper, it offers excellent interior space.

The front seats are easy to feel comfortable, and the electronic seats offer enough adjustability to get a comfortable driving position. The flat-bottomed steering wheel also helps in this regard, making it easier for you to slide in and out without your legs touching the steering wheel.

The storage options are also plentiful, with door pockets for large bottles, two cup holders next to the gear lever, a wireless smartphone charging tray, a spacious channel under the center console, and of course, a storage compartment under the armrests.

The rooms at the rear are also eye-catching.

There was no problem tucking my 183cm torso behind the driving position, the rear seat base slides back and forth, while the backrest angle can also be adjusted to find a more comfortable position.

When I was driving the X-Trail Ti, I installed two forward-facing car seats on the outboard, and the wide rear doors made it all easier.

Rear passengers also have access to door bag bottle holders, a foldable center armrest with two cup holders, air vents, and their own climate control.

Once the trunk is opened, a 585-liter space can be seen that can easily accommodate a full-size stroller, diaper bags, groceries, and more.

However, Nissan makes very clever use of space, as the trunk floor has two floors. Fake flooring can also be used as a divider to prevent items from moving around, and the cargo shutter can be removed and stored underneath so you don't lose it.

Nissan did not disclose the volume of the trunk with the second-row seats folded.

It's also worth noting that the Ti class is only available as a five-seater model, so buyers who want three-row flexibility mean they have to opt for a lower-tier model with less equipment (and lower cost), or choose a competitor like the Mitsubishi Outlander or Honda CR-V.

日产 X-Trail 有 Apple CarPlay 和 Android Auto 吗?

The Nissan X-Trial Ti features a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

However, only the former can be connected wirelessly, while Android users (like me) will need to use a cable. When using Android Auto, plugging in a cable is annoying, but at least it provides a stable connection.

If you don't have cables on hand, the X-Trail's infotainment system has built-in satellite navigation as well as digital radio.

The software is also fast, typing addresses is as fast as looking up on Google Maps, and the touchscreen input is smooth and sensitive.

The infotainment home screen can also be easily customized to display more commonly used functions in places that are easily within reach.

The infotainment display is backed up by a digital instrument cluster of the same size, which can also be adjusted to show the desired readings, while also featuring a huge 10.8-inch head-up display.

The Nissan X-Trail Ti is equipped with three large displays, which really gives a sense of being at the forefront of technology.

Is the Nissan X-Trail a safe car?

The Nissan X-Trail received the highest five-star ANCAP safety rating in the 2021 test and is available for all new models manufactured in August 2022 and later.

The five-star rating is valid until December 2027, according to ANCAP's new six-year rules.

The X-Trail achieved very good results in both the adult occupant and child occupant protection tests, scoring 91% and 90%, respectively.

This puts its passenger safety on par with high-end, more expensive, and all-electric products like the BMW iX, Audi Q8 e-tron, and Jaguar I-Pace.

The Vulnerable Road User Protection Test also received a respectable 74% score, while the X-Trail received a near-perfect 97% score in the Safety Assist category.

What safety technologies does the Nissan X-Trail have?

The 2024 Nissan X-Trail comes with a wide variety of standard safety equipment with all the features to keep you and your family safe.

All versions of the new X-Trail come with front and rear automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist (front only) detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, reversing camera, and automatic high beams.

Starting at the next level (ST-L), the X-Trail gets front parking sensors, a surround view monitor, tire pressure monitoring, and Nissan's ProPilot semi-autonomous driving technology that combines lane centering with adaptive cruise control.

The only advantages of our Ti in terms of safety over the aforementioned models are the automatic wipers and adaptive headlights, while the digital mirrors can come in handy in heavy rain to give a clearer view of what's happening behind you.

In my experience with the car, I found that the safety system was unobtrusive and largely faded into the background.

There have been no instances of aggressive lane keeping or false AEB alerts, and the ProPilot system is one of the best semi-autonomous highway driving systems I've experienced, thanks to a smooth deceleration and intelligent lane centering system that actually keeps the vehicle in the middle of the line.

How much does the Nissan X-Trail cost to run?

Like all new Nissan models, the X-Trail Ti comes with a five-year/unlimited kilometer warranty, in line with the warranty periods offered by Toyota, Mazda, Ford, and Hyundai.

However, this is still lower than the warranty period available to Kia (seven years/unlimited kilometers) and Mitsubishi (up to ten years/unlimited kilometers) buyers.

The X-Trail has regular maintenance intervals of every 12 months or 10,000 kilometers (whichever comes first), which is lower than the 15,000 kilometers driving cycle of competitors like the Toyota RAV5 and Mazda CX-5.

For the first five years or 50,000 km of scheduled maintenance, the X-Trail Ti will cost buyers $2,324, with one, two, three, four, and five services costing $359, $466, $529, $566, and $404 respectively.

This makes the X-Trail more expensive to maintain for five years than comparable Mazda CX-5 ($2,114) and Toyota RAV4 ($1,300), although Nissan does offer a prepaid plan that reduces the cost to $2,092.

According to a comparative quote from a 35-year-old male driver living in Chatswood, NSW, the cost of insurance for the X-Trail Ti is AUD 1846 per year. Insurance estimates may vary depending on your location, driving history, and personal circumstances.

This again puts it above the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4, with the latter two costing $1660 and $1754 respectively for 12 months.

Is Nissan X-Trail fuel efficient?

The official fuel consumption figure for the Nissan X-Trail Ti is 7.8 liters per 100 km, but during my drive with this car, I found that the average fuel consumption was 8.7 liters per 100 km.

My main use of X-Trail is for commuting during rush hour, dropping kids off at nursery, and doing family activities on weekends.

Despite the higher actual figures, the X-Trail's official city fuel consumption is still below 10.0L/100km, which is where I use the car most often.

Equipped with a 55-liter fuel tank, the X-Trail Ti has a theoretical range of up to 846 km, but according to my numbers, the distance is closer to 625 km.

The X-Trail Ti also uses 91-octane gasoline, which reduces refueling costs.

How does it feel to drive a Nissan X-Trail?

As a family SUV, the Nissan X-Trail needs to grasp several key points, including ease of driving, comfort, and spaciousness.

We've established that it achieves the latter, but how does it perform on the home road?

The X-Trail Ti is powered by a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol powertrain with an output of 135kW/244Nm, which is powerful for a mid-size family SUV. Sending power to four wheels also means more traction in slippery conditions.

Keep in mind, though, that the X-Trail's powertrain is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and does start to feel rubbery when accelerating violently, but when driving at lower speeds in town, the powertrain works well.

Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters can alleviate some of the CVT's drawbacks, but the transmission is a single-speed unit that "simulates" shifting, and the X-Trail isn't designed for dynamically engaged driving.

Still, it has a sporty driving mode that changes the throttle and steering settings accordingly, but it does highlight the weaknesses of the X-Trail powertrain more than anything else.

Other driving modes include Eco Mode, Auto Mode, Snow Mode, and Downhill Control, which can help when appropriate, as well as Off-Road Mode, which is suitable for when black roads turn to sand or dirt.

After trying various driving modes, what I actually liked the most was the Eco setting because it simplified everything and was the most comfortable of all the modes for me and my family.

The X-Trail's steering is also light, too light for me, which is convenient in town, but also means that the input feels a bit unnatural.

When off-center, even the slightest movement will turn the front end in another direction, and the more you turn the steering wheel, the smaller the steering angle. It feels very unnatural and certainly takes a while to get used to.

But on the other hand, in the city center, X-Trail parking is very easy, and it's also easy to get in and out of slow-moving traffic thanks to fewer input operations.

Aside from the steering, the suspension does an excellent job of absorbing bumps and ruts on Melbourne's less-than-ideal streets, and even though the X-Trail Ti is fitted with large 19-inch wheels, the road and wind noise is very quiet even when driving on the highway.

If you're after a carefree, easy-to-live family SUV, look no further than the Nissan X-Trail Ti.

Can Nissan X-Trail be towed?

The 2024 Nissan X-Trail Ti is rated for maximum traction of 2000 kg when braking and 750 kg when not braking.

For a mid-size family SUV, the two-ton brake towing capacity isn't too bad to haul a fully loaded trailer, wagon, and bike, but keep in mind that the naturally aspirated engine only produces 244Nm of torque. This means that the traction is not great, but it is still sufficient in an emergency.

Performance and fuel economy will obviously suffer as well during hauling, and owners should always keep the 467kg payload rating in mind so that the X-Trail doesn't overburden.

Should I buy a Nissan X-Trail?

For those looking for a new family SUV, the Nissan 2024 X-Trail Ti is a great choice.

The Toyota RAV4 hybrid is less expensive and offers a more fuel-efficient powertrain, but the fit, looks, and equipment offered by the X-Trail are really excellent aspects of the Nissan SUV.

Repair costs may be lower, and buyers may be willing to spend a little less on a lower-spec seven-seater, but as a comfortable, spacious everyday driving car, the Nissan X-Trail Ti ticks all the boxes.
