The NBA Draft is always full of surprises and surprises. On draft night in 2005, a diminutive but gifted point guard caught everyone's attention.
He is none other than Chris Paul, who has been hailed as the best playmaker in the league of the future. Surprisingly, Paul didn't become the top-three pick as expected, but was only selected by the New Orleans Hornets with the fourth pick.

He averaged only 8.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in his rookie season, and he didn't even make the All-Rookie team. During his seven seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, Williams played as a role player and failed to become the centerpiece of the team.
The highlight of his career came in 2007-08, averaging 14.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, but that performance didn't last long. Since then, Williams has moved from team to team, never finding the right place.
Still, his career lasted 15 seasons, averaging 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, which is pretty good for a role player. Williams' example teaches us that even a high-pick pick doesn't necessarily guarantee a player stardom.
Deron Williams' career is arguably the closest to Paul of the three. Drafted by the Utah Jazz with the third pick, Williams quickly showed his talent.
Later in his rookie season, he gradually adapted to the rhythm of the NBA and became an important member of the team. Since the beginning of his second season, Williams has been a starter, averaging 16 points and 9 assists per game to help the Jazz reach the Western Conference Finals.
In the 2007-08 season, Williams ushered in the peak of his career, averaging 18.8 points and 10.5 assists per game, and was named to the All-NBA Second Team. In the seasons that followed, Williams averaged nearly 20 points and 10 assists per game, becoming one of the top point guards in the league.
His relationship with the Jazz gradually deteriorated, eventually leading to a trade to the New Jersey Nets in 2011. Over the course of several seasons with the Nets, Williams' form has declined, but he remains an excellent playmaker.
In 2015, he joined the Dallas Mavericks, but his performance was not as good as he once was. In 2017, at the age of 32, Williams announced his retirement, ending his 12-year NBA career.
Overall, Williams' career has been a success, although not as brilliant as Paul's. He was named to the All-Star team three times and the All-Star team twice, and his 16.3 points and 8.2 assists per game are enough to prove his quality.
In contrast, Chris Paul's career is undoubtedly the best. Drafted as the fourth pick, Paul showed exceptional talent from the start.

Throughout his career, Paul was named to the All-Star team 12 times, All-Star team 11 times, All-Defensive Team seven times, assist leader four times, and steal leader six times. He averaged 17.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 9.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game, making him one of the greatest point guards in NBA history.
Looking back at the 2005 draft, it's not hard to see that a high pick doesn't guarantee a player's success. Andrew Bogut was a first-round pick and became a good defensive centre-forward, but he failed to become the heart of the team.
Marvin Williams has been a role player throughout his career. Deron Williams was once the league's top point guard, but his career was relatively short.
In contrast, Chris Paul, the fourth overall pick, became the most successful player in this draft, not only with many individual honors, but also with multiple successes. This contrast tells us that the draft pick is just a starting point, and that what really determines a player's achievements is his hard work, talent, and adaptability.
