Compared to bourbon, rye whiskey is arguably the oldest whiskey in the United States and was once the most popular spirit. Like all U.S. whiskeys, it is produced according to the Federal Distilled Spirits Standards of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Tax and Trade.
In short, these regulations require that any U.S.-made whiskey must be distilled to a maximum of 80% ABV, aged at no more than 62.5% ABV in new charred oak barrels, and then bottled at at at least 40% ABV.
