Although both have been around for a long time, the widespread adoption of the AHB architecture in the consumer power supply space is a little later than the LLC architecture. In the design of traditional chargers, the LLC half-bridge resonant technology brings extremely high conversion efficiency to the system due to its soft-switching characteristics. However, in the PD3.1 protocol application scenario, although the input voltage of the LLC architecture can be powered by PFC pre-regulation, its output voltage range cannot meet the wide output range requirements of 5 to 28V in the PD3.1 standard. For a wide voltage output, additional step-down circuitry is often required.
In contrast, the AHB asymmetric half-bridge topology not only maintains high conversion efficiency, but also has the ability to flexibly adjust the output voltage. This enables the AHB architecture to directly achieve a wide range of voltage outputs without relying on external step-down circuits, which is a perfect fit for PD fast charging applications. With the gradual maturity of the AHB controller market, Jewalt closely follows the market trend and has successively launched two asymmetric half-bridge flyback controllers, JW1556 and JW1556B, filling the gap in this field in the domestic market.

The JW1556 is an asymmetric half-bridge flyback controller in a QFN 4x4-20 package for offline flyback converter applications. The chip has an integrated power supply boost converter with an input voltage range of 2.5-38V, a maximum operating frequency of 1.5MHz, and supports 65-300W fast charging applications.
JW1556 works in ZVS mode under heavy load, and supports Adaptive ZVS switch to achieve optimal efficiency. It works in DCM mode under light load, and can provide two-way output control of main power switch and auxiliary switch, and supports functions such as high-voltage start-up, X-capacitor discharge, burst mode control, and adjustable line compensation.
