According to public information, Liu Guisheng was born in Kunming, Yunnan Province in August 1930. In 1949, he entered the Department of Political History of Lingnan University, where he studied Chinese history under the tutelage of Professor Chen Yinke, and transferred to the Department of History of Tsinghua University in September of the following year, graduating in 1952. In 1953, he graduated from the Chinese Revolutionary History Research Class of Chinese National University. In the same year, he returned to Tsinghua University to teach, and successively served as teaching assistant, lecturer (1965), associate professor (1978), professor (1984), and served as a member of the University Council, a member of the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee, the chairman of the Academic Degrees Committee of the Department of Social Sciences and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the deputy director of the Institute of Ideology and Culture, a member of the 7th and 8th Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and a member of the Expert Committee on the Protection of Documents in the Republic of China Period of the National Library of the Ministry of Culture. In 1993, Liu Guisheng was transferred to the Department of History of Peking University as a professor and doctoral supervisor, and was the first supervisor of the Department of History of Peking University to actually recruit doctoral students in modern Chinese history, and at the same time presided over the earliest postdoctoral research station of modern Chinese history at Peking University. In 1998, he was transferred back to Tsinghua University and was hired as a librarian at the Beijing Research Institute of Culture and History in the same year.
Liu Guisheng has long been committed to the study of the history of the Communist Party of China and the history of modern Chinese thought. In terms of academic thought, under the influence of his mentors Chen Yinke, Lei Haizong, and Shao Xunzhengzhu, he inherited the national cultural spirit of "humanistic innovation" and the academic paradigm of the old Tsinghua University, and took the eight things of "body, mind, family, country, ancient, modern, Chinese and foreign" as the essentials, emphasizing the unity of learning and being a person, focusing on the integration of ancient and modern, the integration of China and the West, two-way interaction, and mutual interpretation, and advocating the understanding of world culture on the basis of continuously deepening the understanding of national culture; At the same time, on the basis of in-depth understanding of the world's mainstream cultures, we should deepen our understanding of our own national culture.
In terms of research methods, he advocates that the idea of "pre-flow" and "first-line" should be adopted for learning, emphasizing cross-cultural, interlinguistic and interdisciplinary research, emphasizing the combination of text analysis and contextual investigation, and paying full attention to the differences in the production conditions and production procedures of texts.
Liu Guisheng is the author of "Liu Guisheng's Essays on Academic Culture" and "Historiography, Historical Knowledge, Culture", among which "Analysis of Li Dazhao's Early Political Theory" and "Modern Scholars' Misunderstanding of "Deposing the Hundred Schools of Thought and Respecting Confucianism" and other representative papers, which have been highly valued by the academic community. He has successively edited "Historical Materials of the Work-Study Movement in France", "Illustrating Modern China", "The Dislocation of the Times and the Choice of Theory", "New Theory of Yan Fu Thought", and presided over and participated in the compilation and annotation of the "Complete Works of Li Dazhao" and "The Complete Works of Sun Yat-sen" of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" national key book publishing planning projects. His achievements have won many awards such as the Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award and the China Outstanding Publication Award.
In recognition of his academic achievements in the fields of Li Dazhao, the early history of the Communist Party of China, the history of the spread of Marxism, and the history of the New Culture Movement, Liu Guisheng was awarded the "Li Dazhao Research Lifetime Achievement Award" by the China Li Dazhao Research Association in 2021.
Liu Guisheng is one of the important academic leaders in the teaching reform of the "History of the Communist Party of China" course. After the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1978, in response to the instructions of the Ministry of Education on the reform of the "History of the Communist Party of China" curriculum, Liu Guisheng proposed that Tsinghua University should enrich and enrich the teaching content of the courses "History of the Chinese Revolution" and "Modern Chinese History" based on the principle of "the vision of world culture and the mind of global politics". Since its implementation in the 80s of the 20th century, the effect has been remarkable and well received by students.
From 1994 to 1996, he taught courses such as "Special Topics in Modern Chinese Intellectual History" and "Intellectual History of Modern Chinese Historiography" at Peking University, which attracted graduate students from the Department of History of Peking University and Tsinghua University to attend the lectures and strengthened the cooperation between the two departments. He is the supervising professor of the first "National 100 Excellent Doctoral Dissertations", and has trained a large number of master's and doctoral students at Tsinghua University and Peking University, many of whom have become academic backbones and leaders in the history disciplines of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University and other universities.
Liu Guisheng insisted on the independence and self-confidence of the Chinese national culture, believed that the general root of university culture lies in the self-confidence of its own national culture, and proposed that in terms of culture, it is necessary to "not forget the original, absorb foreigners, and create the future". He advocated that in foreign cultural exchanges, we must first make a home for our souls, that is, we should firmly link our life ideals with the destiny of the nation ideologically; He has a broad vision and has been recognized by the international academic education community for his solid academic skills.
