At Bayer's Berlin campus, the new Berlin Center for Gene and Cell Therapy, jointly operated by Bayer AG and the Charité Medical School Berlin, will provide a working environment for up to 900 employees. The translational center will be an incubator for start-ups with production facilities to create a biotech ecosystem for novel treatment options using gene and cell therapies. At the center, researchers will work on developing new drugs that can be delivered to patients more quickly.

Located in the heart of the German capital Berlin, the Translational Center combines research, development and production of gene and cell therapies. Oriented towards an interdisciplinary approach and mission, the center will be human-centred while making ongoing research topics practical for the surrounding community. The transparent design of the new building embodies the concept of "scientific display".

The building is located in Nordhafen, the southernmost part of the campus, in direct dialogue with the city, the adjacent park and the Bayer campus. Its cubic volume echoes the urban environment and the Bayer campus through the horizontal façade. Its transparent glass base intertwines the building with the surrounding greenery. The projection facing the riverfront promenade creates a weatherproof area and also provides space for the café. From here, visitors can admire state-of-the-art technology and workflows in the laboratory area on the second floor. Modern research at the Translational Center is located on the upper level. The modular grid and the building's simple basic shape allow the layout to be adapted to flexible uses, connected by shared areas spanning two floors.

The folded façade elements give the building an abstract, transparent appearance, while integrating functional equipment. Depending on the orientation of the building, different projections and angles can be created, helping to optimize shading. Integrated photovoltaic panels harness solar energy. Facing the embankment, the façade expands into a balcony to provide a seating area for researchers with views of Nordhafen.

Surrounded by a riverside park with access to the water's edge, the Berlin Center for Gene & Cell Therapy combines science, nature and the city to create an inviting venue with a unique identity, open to employees and visitors alike.
