Recently, I have been researching the county chronicles of my hometown, Huoshan County. In fact, I am no stranger to Huoshan County Chronicles, when I was a child, I had a copy of "Huoshan County Chronicles" at home, but that version of "Huoshan County Chronicles" is a vernacular version (about 85 editions). Recently, I found the Guangxu version of "Huoshan County Chronicles", to be honest, when I saw the content for the first time, I really didn't have the desire to read it.
Why? Because the Guangxu version of "Huoshan County Chronicles" is full of classical Chinese, the most important thing is that the Chinese characters in it are not simple Chinese characters, but traditional Chinese characters. For example, in the above paragraph, most people may find that there is not a single punctuation mark, how can this break the sentence? So sometimes you have to believe that we have been studying Chinese from primary school to university for a practical purpose, because you may use it one day.
Regarding the division of Huoshan County, the administrative divisions of the past (ancient) and today are different, and by reading the content of the county chronicles, you will understand how Huoshan County was divided in the Qing Dynasty and during the Guangxu period. The Qing Dynasty implemented the Baojia system (Lijia system), with 10 households as one jia and 10 jia as one bao. In the early years of Xianfeng, the regiment unit appeared again.
Guangxu edition of "Huoshan County Chronicles" Huoshan is divided into 4 townships, 12 regiments and 94 guarantees, namely Dongxiang, Nanxiang, Xixiang, and Beixiang.
Each township is divided into a number of guarantees, for example, a regiment in Dongxiang has 7 guarantees, while Nanxiang has 4 regiments and 27 guarantees, Xixiang has 6 regiments and 53 guarantees, and a regiment in Beixiang has 7 guarantees.
Indeed, today our Huoshan County is divided into a number of townships, each township contains a number of villages, which is actually a little similar to the Baojia system, the difference is that in the past, the rural autonomy was relatively strong, a A had a chief, and the first chief was responsible for managing the 10 households, and a Baochang was responsible for managing the Bao, which is different from today's township system.
Secondly, by reading the ancient county annals, it is not difficult for us to find that some ancient place names have actually been preserved to this day.
For example, the names of the places such as Ryozenpu, Sengasa-ji Temple, and Mansui River recorded in the picture below were the same names in the past, but in today's society, they are still the same place names.
Of course, some place names have changed, some have changed the characters, and some have disappeared in whole places.
After reading the county chronicles, the most admired is the wisdom of the ancients, the transportation was inconvenient in the past, I really don't know how the ancients measured the distance, in my opinion, many of the marked distances are not much different from today's satellite measurements.
The only thing that puzzles me is that in the past, in some places, the same place was divided into several bao, such as Dahuaping Town, the second regiment of Nanxiang had Dahuaping, and later the ninth regiment of Xixiang also included Dahuaping, I guess it may be that Dahuaping is relatively large and divided into two.
