On June 29, 2024, Shanghai ushered in the grand convening of the mid-year meeting of the Young Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO). The conference was hosted by the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology and co-organized by the Young Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO YOUNG). Among them, the gastrointestinal tumor sub-venue brought together top experts and young talents in the field of gastrointestinal cancer from all over the country to discuss the latest progress and future development direction of gastrointestinal cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Chairman's Speech: Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Tumors: The Collision of Thinking and Practice

The presidium members of the conference included Professor Zhang Xiaotian from Peking University Cancer Hospital, Professor Chen Gong from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Professor Ding Peirong from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Professor Liu Jing from Shengjing Hospital Affiliated to China Medical University, Professor Wei Jia from Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University School of Medicine, and Professor Chen Xiaofeng from Jiangsu Provincial People's Hospital.

At the beginning of the conference, Professor Zhang Xiaotian, Professor Chen Gong and Professor Liu Jing successively made opening speeches, and the three chairmen of the conference, on behalf of the members of the presidium, extended a warm welcome to the experts and scholars attending the meeting, and profoundly elaborated on the theme and importance of the conference. Exploration of immunological and anti-angiogenic therapies

The first part of the conference was chaired by Prof. Jing Liu and Prof. Xiaofeng Chen. Professor Zheng Yanan from Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, first shared the exploration and practice of surgical treatment of gastric cancer in the era of immunity. He introduced in detail the application prospects and challenges of immunotherapy in the surgical treatment of gastric cancer, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. Professor Cheng pointed out that with the rapid development of immunotherapy, surgical treatment strategies also need to be constantly adjusted to maximise the benefits for patients.

Immediately afterwards, Professor Deng Wei from Beijing Friendship Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University brought a special report on the application of anti-angiogenic drugs combined with immunotherapy in advanced gastric cancer. She noted that the combination of anti-angiogenic drugs and immunotherapy is expected to provide a new treatment option for patients with advanced gastric cancer, and demonstrated good data from multiple blockbuster clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy and safety of this combination treatment regimen.

Experts agreed that future research should focus more on the development of individualized treatment plans to improve treatment outcomes.

At the end of the first part, Professor Chen Xiaofeng introduced and introduced a special session - "We Voice - Qinglan Society Launching Ceremony". The second part of the conference was chaired by Professor Wei Jia from the Drum Tower Hospital affiliated to Nanjing University School of Medicine and Professor He Wan from Shenzhen People's Hospital. Professor Cao Yanshuo from Peking University Cancer Hospital and Professor Wang Yizhuo from the First Hospital of Jilin University respectively gave a detailed interpretation of the research on the treatment of perioperative gastric cancer and advanced or metastatic gastric cancer presented at the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting.

Professor Cao Yanshuo focused on the new strategies for the perioperative treatment of gastric cancer, including neoadjuvant therapy and postoperative adjuvant therapy, emphasized the importance of immunotherapy in perioperative treatment, and looked forward to the future exploration direction of individualized and precision therapy.

Professor Wang Yizhuo also pointed out that with the deepening of molecular biology research, more targets have been discovered, the division of gastric cancer population has become more and more refined, and the treatment methods and programs have become more precise and individualized, which has brought new dawn and hope to patients with advanced gastric cancer.

In the ensuing discussion, Professor Xing Rui from Shengjing Hospital affiliated to China Medical University and Professor Su Meng from Liaoning Provincial Cancer Hospital shared their clinical experiences and insights on immunotherapy for perioperative and advanced gastric cancer. Professor He Wan answered and summarized the questions in the discussion, and briefly interpreted the future exploration direction of first-line treatment based on her own clinical experience.

The third part was chaired by Professor Xue Junli from Shanghai East Hospital and Professor Dong Chao from the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University in Yunnan Province. Professor Xia Fan from Fudan University Cancer Hospital and Professor Zhang Jianwei from the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University respectively gave a wonderful report on the research progress of the treatment of locally advanced colorectal cancer and advanced colorectal cancer in ASCO in 2024.

In addition, Professor Xia Fan affirmed the value of research and exploration on organ preservation of bowel cancer, and shared the latest progress in the whole process of neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) for rectal cancer. Professor Zhang Jianwei focused on the new progress in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer, and studied and interpreted it from three parts: colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM), first-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer and precision treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Professor Zhang Jianwei pointed out that with the deepening of molecular biology research, new drugs targeting targets such as KRAS G12C and BRAF have also emerged, which has greatly enriched the choices of patients with advanced colorectal cancer.

During the discussion session, Professor Han Peng from the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Harbin Medical University, Professor Wang Deqiang from the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangsu University, and Professor Meng Lingjun from the China-Japan Friendship Hospital of Jilin University had a heated discussion and deeply discussed the hot topics in the treatment of bowel cancer. Experts agreed that future research should pay more attention to the optimal design and consideration of research protocols, pursue more effective and safe treatment regimens, improve the overall treatment effect and better improve the quality of life of patients.

The fourth part was co-chaired by Professor Xue Junli from Shanghai East Hospital and Professor Deng Ting from Tianjin Cancer Hospital. Professor Lu Yingying from Xijing Hospital of Air Force Medical University, Professor Qi Changsong from Peking University Cancer Hospital and Professor Liang Tingting from the First Hospital of Jilin University respectively introduced the research progress of conversion therapy, CAR-T therapy and bispecific antibody therapy for gastrointestinal tumors.
