Recently, an extremely moving scene occurred in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Zhabei Central Hospital in Jing'an District, Shanghai.
Mr. Wu (pseudonym), a 67-year-old resident of Jing'an, was admitted to the hospital with diabetes complicated by ketoacidosis. After clinical evaluation, the patient's deep coma state did not improve, and the condition was irreversible, basically reaching the state of brain death. After careful consideration, the family members reluctantly agreed to donate their organs, leaving the hope of life to more people.
After getting in touch with the Human Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) of Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, the OPO staff checked Mr. Wu's indicators and fully communicated with the family. In late June, Mr. Wu was transferred to Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, where the medical staff stood neatly to pay a silent tribute to Mr. Wu on the operating table. Subsequently, his organ donation and harvesting operation went smoothly. His donated liver, two kidneys and two corneas have given three patients with liver and kidney failure a new lease of life and two patients with eye diseases in the dark.
"Mr. Wu is a retired people's teacher, and his willingness to serve others and selfless dedication are the noble qualities of his life, and he should feel relieved if he can finally help those in need when his life is dying." Mr. Wu's family burst into tears.
The medical staff and related staff expressed their most sincere condolences and gratitude to Mr. Wu's family: "Mr. Wu has illuminated the future of other people's lives with the light of his life, saved many families who have suffered from illness, and continued his own life in a special way. ”
As of June 10, 2024, more than 6.78 million people have registered for voluntary organ donation nationwide, and more than 53,000 cases of organ donation have been completed after the death of citizens, successfully saving the lives of more than 100,000 people.
