A choice for a rural medical student: I haven't done enough

(People's Daily Health Client Reporter Yang Lin Song Wen/Picture) "I have feelings, but I can't go." On July 10, Wei Shujun told the People's Daily health client reporter that he still has more things to do here.

In 2012, Wei Shujun, whose hometown is in Luding County, Ganzi Prefecture, applied for the clinical medicine (directional specialty) major of North Sichuan Medical College. Three years later, he became one of the first batch of rural order-oriented free medical students in Sichuan Province and went to Qingde Town Health Center to start a primary medical work for at least 6 years. However, after 6 years of service, the Guards chose to stay here.

The change in the town health center is not just about new houses

That year, he was 23 years old.

On August 1, 2015, Wei Shujun, who had just graduated from North Sichuan Medical College, came to work in Qingde Town Health Center in Xiangcheng County in accordance with the requirements of targeted employment, which was the first time he set foot on the land of Qingde Town.

"On the first day of registration, the old dean called me down, pointed to an activity room and said, 'This is our health center.'" Wei Shujun recalled that the activity room was very dimly lit, and the signal in the mountains was not good, so it was "luck" to make calls and send text messages.

These days did not last long, and the construction of the new health center began in full swing. Wei Shujun told the People's Daily health client reporter that at that time, he and two other doctors always went to work as "supervisors" between visits to check the water and electricity decoration to ensure the safety of water and electricity. "This health center will serve the villagers for a long, long time in the future, and there must be no safety problems."

At the end of 2015, the new health center was finally put into use. In the past 10 years, the improvement of the hardware conditions of Qingde Town Health Center has gone far beyond the working environment.

On July 10, Wei Shujun was recording the health status of villagers on the Sichuan Provincial Residents' Health File Cloud Platform.

"One of the key tasks of the township level health center is to record the health records of residents." Wei Shujun recalled that in 2022, Qingde Town Health Center successfully connected to the Sichuan Provincial Residents' Health Record Cloud Platform. The cloud platform can not only centrally store and manage residents' health information, realize cross-regional and cross-institutional information sharing, but also greatly improve the efficiency of primary medical and health management.

"With the cloud platform, villagers in Qingde Town can retrieve their health records from any medical institution in Sichuan Province when they go to the platform, which can help doctors have a comprehensive understanding of the patient's health status and improve the efficiency and accuracy of diagnosis and treatment." Talking about the changes in the health center in recent years, Wei Shujun is like a treasure. "I have witnessed the development of the health center from good to good, and now all aspects of the hospital are improving, but I still hope that more talents can stay here." Wei Shujun said.

"Since the implementation of the targeted medical student policy, a total of 25 targeted medical students have come to the township and county, contributing to the health of the residents here." On July 10, Wang Fangrong, deputy director of the Xiangcheng County Health Bureau, told the People's Daily health client reporter that now, the conditions of the health center have improved, and the level and ability of medical workers must also keep up.

Nowadays, in order to improve the medical service level of grassroots medical staff, the Xiangcheng County Health Bureau holds at least nine business training courses every year, and the counterpart cities regularly appoint medical experts to carry out physician skills training in the townships and counties.

At present, there are 8 medical staff in Qingde Town Health Center, guarding the health of 2,378 villagers in 5 surrounding administrative villages.

"Qingdezhen is my home"

Wei Shujun's home is 528 kilometers away in Luding County.

When I applied for the orientation medical student examination, I didn't expect it to be so far from home. "I stay here more than 320 days a year, and it's impossible to say that I don't want to be home." The Guardian smiled sheepishly.

With the joint efforts of Wei Shujun and his colleagues, 100% of the family doctors in Qingde Town Health Center have signed contracts. Due to the sparsely populated area and scattered terrain of Qingde Town, it is not easy for the villagers to come to the health center, and Wei Shujun and other doctors are on standby 24 hours a day, and they will rush to the villagers' homes as soon as possible if there is any emergency.

On July 10, Wei Shujun went to a villager's home to measure her blood pressure

The health center also regularly follows up on the health status of the villagers, which is then recorded in the health records. Patients with non-chronic diseases need to be followed up every three months, and patients with chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes and the disabled elderly should be followed up once a week.

"The most difficult part of doing follow-up work is to find villagers, some people are working outside, some people are driving taxis in the local area and cannot answer the phone in time, and some elderly people do not like to carry their mobile phones with them. Therefore, we often call people while going over the mountains and mountains, in order to be able to record the current health status of the villagers. Wei Shujun said that in the past 9 years, from brochures to various souvenirs of mission activities, he has always tried all kinds of ways to improve the effect of health education, so that the people can know a little more.

On July 10, Wei Shujun was briefing reporters on the boxed tissues that had been distributed as souvenirs of the missionary activities.

Wei Shujun said that the most important thing to do a good job in health education is to "repeat it." In the past nine years, he has been in contact with the villagers countless times, and he has never forgotten to educate them about health. He cited such a set of data: in 2014, Qingde Town Health Center replaced a total of 6 health education bulletins and carried out 3 health knowledge lectures; In 2023, Qingde Town Health Center will set up a total of 16 health education bulletins, 13 health education knowledge lectures, and 14 health education consultation activities, which also makes many villagers in Tibetan areas have health awareness.

Today, Qingde Town Health Center has achieved 100% of the town's residents' paper file filing rate and 100% electronic health file filing rate; In the first five months of this year, he has set up 6 health education bulletins, carried out 8 health education knowledge lectures, and 6 health education consultation activities.

Real efforts will bring real change. "In the past, it was necessary to go door-to-door to get vaccinated against children, but now most of the villagers have the awareness of vaccination and basically come to the health center to get vaccinated." Wei Shujun said that the vaccine needs to be stored in a refrigerated environment between 2 °C ~ 8 °C, and it should be observed for half an hour after vaccination. Vaccination in the health center is not only safe and hygienic, but also can detect the child's discomfort symptoms in time. Many of the villagers were sick and could no longer "stiffen", and they began to trust the young man more and more.

Again and again over the mountains and mountains, again and again the instructions were admonished, quietly narrowing the distance between the Weishu army and the villagers.

"Now, Qingde Town is my second home." Wei Shujun said.

"What I want to do for the villagers and what I can do is much more than just medical care"

"There are four people in this house, the eldest daughter is working, and the younger daughter is still studying, but their father is a little disabled in his feet, and the main labor force in the family is her mother's ......; This family is brothers from the one in front of them, and the people in this area are all relatives......" The reporter was on the way to follow Wei Shujun into the house, and he unconsciously began to introduce every family he passed by to the reporter.

The white Tibetan houses that belong to the townships and counties are full of stories in the eyes of the Weishu Army.

Why can we understand the basic situation of each household so well? Wei Shujun said that it was because of targeted poverty alleviation.

Poverty due to illness and return to poverty due to illness is one of the main causes of poverty among the rural poor. In order to fight the battle of poverty alleviation, townships, cities and counties have vigorously implemented health poverty alleviation. Since December 2021, Xiangcheng County has combined the national basic public health service project with the rural revitalization work of "returning to poverty due to illness", continuously improved the construction of hardware facilities in township health centers and village clinics, and carried out free physical examinations for all.

"Our health center also has to shoulder the responsibility of targeted poverty alleviation, and I myself accepted more than 20 tasks at that time." To prevent him from forgetting, he printed all his assignments on an A4 piece of paper and pasted them behind the door of his staff dormitory, so that he would read them every morning before going out.

On July 10, Wei Shujun was meeting a familiar villager on the street, so he sat aside and played with the villagers.

At that time, where the villagers were, the Weishu army was guarding. "When a villager is doing farm work in the fields, we have to run to him and ask him about the basic situation of his family. Sometimes we sit in the grass hut, sometimes we sit in the fields, and we don't go back until at least 11 or 2 o'clock in the evening. ”

In the past, Ganzi Prefecture has always been a national-level poverty-stricken county, and it is also one of the main battlefields of poverty alleviation in the "three districts and three prefectures". Today, Xiangcheng County has become a "common prosperity pilot county". On March 15, 2024, the People's Government of Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture issued the "Policies and Measures to Support the High-quality Development of Xiangcheng County and the Construction of Common Prosperity Pilot Counties" to support Xiangcheng County to take the lead in promoting common prosperity and actively explore the path of common prosperity in Ganzi. From "poverty-stricken counties" to "experimental counties", this change is inseparable from the efforts of grassroots workers.

"I want to do more for the villagers than just medical care. I sincerely hope that every villager can get better and better, and I hope that my efforts will not be in vain. Wei Shujun said.

On December 15, 2023, the National Health Commission released data that in the past 13 years, the country has continued to promote the work of free training of medical students in rural areas, and in 2023 alone, more than 4,800 medical students in rural free orders have completed standardized training for residents and entered grassroots positions in townships and towns. By the end of 2022, the central government had invested a total of 1.79 billion yuan to train 650,000 grassroots health workers, including 430,000 rural doctors. The Guardians are one of them.

This year, Wei Shujun is 32 years old. Recalling the first day of reporting to the Qingde Town Health Center, he was still deeply impressed: "On that day, I took a long, long bus, from the bottom of the mountain to the mountain, over the mountains. I fell asleep in the car and woke up to find myself still on the road. ”

At that moment, he knew that he was getting farther and farther away from his hometown.

But he is getting closer and closer to the villagers of Qingde Town.
