Wen Zhengming, as an outstanding calligrapher and painter in the Ming Dynasty, was known as one of the "Four Talents of Wumen", and his fine brushstrokes and landscapes were praised by later generations.
Wen Zhengming's fine brush landscapes are known for their tranquil, elegant, and peaceful atmosphere. Although his works were taught by Shen Zhou, they were not enveloped by Shen Zhouxiong's strong and rough painting style, but created a beautiful, delicate and elegant landscape painting style. Under his brush, the life scenes of the literati such as chanting, cooking tea, listening to the spring, and enjoying the cool have become eternal creative themes, and the fine tone of the picture and the unique choice of subject matter constitute his quiet and warm artistic style.
Wen Zhengming is good at using delicate lines to outline the form and contours of landscapes, the lines are fine and sharp, calm and quiet. His fine brushstrokes have the flavor of Wang Meng and Zhao Mengfu, and he can use techniques such as Xie Suo, Idea, Lotus Leaf, and Phi Ma with ease.
Wen Zhengming pays attention to the gradient and contrast of ink color, and makes the picture more vivid and three-dimensional through the ingenious combination of light ink and thick ink. He absorbed the spirit of "Yunlin Ink Method", and borrowed the ink method of Zhao Mengfu and Huang Zijiu to form his own landscape painting style with fine brushwork, elegant coloring, meticulous composition and quiet artistic conception.
Wen Zhengming's landscape paintings focus on the layout and balance of compositions. He is good at using the balance and symmetry of the center of gravity to make the picture more stable and harmonious, and he is also able to create a sense of hierarchy and depth through the treatment of white space and space.
Wen Zhengming's fine brush landscape representative works are numerous, such as "Stone Lake Pan Moon Picture", "Autumn River Farewell Picture", "Tea Tasting Picture", "Autumn Mountain on the Road", "Summer Picture", "Qiao Lin Cooking Tea Picture", "Lakeside Walking Picture", "Rainy Night Homecoming Picture", "Traveling to Wu's Dongzhuang Picture", "Water Pavilion Poetry and Thinking Map", "Snow Landscape Picture", "Empty Mountain Night Snow Deep Poetry Intention Axis" and so on. These works all show the unique charm and artistic value of the landscape with fine brushstrokes.
Wen Zhengming's fine brushwork landscapes were not only widely praised at the time, but also had a profound impact on later generations. His artistic style has been studied and borrowed by many painters, and has become one of the important representatives in the history of the development of Chinese landscape painting. At the same time, his works also convey a quiet power and profound artistic accomplishment, allowing the viewer to feel the beauty of nature and poetic beauty in the process of appreciation.
