A traffic accident in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, not only claimed three innocent lives, but also showed us the ugliness of indifference and selfishness.
On October 2, a family that was supposed to celebrate their child's first birthday was devastated. A speeding Tesla, at a speed of 128.9 miles, knocked a family of three more than 10 meters into the air, causing an irreparable tragedy.
The perpetrator, a 20-year-old young man, was angry and racing on a crowded street because of an argument with his girlfriend, and his behavior was so bad that it was outrageous.
After the accident, the indifference of the perpetrator is even more chilling. Instead of calling the police or emergency services immediately, he smoked cigarettes and laughed with friends at the scene, as if what had just happened was not a car accident but an inconsequential vignette.
This disregard for life, the evasion of responsibility, makes people ask: what is wrong with our society?
The families of the victims, faced with a sudden disaster, could not accept the fact that they had lost their loved ones. Their grief and anger were transmitted to everyone who paid attention to the matter through the Internet.
However, the response of the perpetrator's family was to try to make the matter private with money, as if life could be measured in money.
This accident is not just a traffic accident, it is a severe test of human nature, morality and law.
If we simply place the blame on a vehicle breakdown, or limit the sentence to seven years in prison, are we acquiescing to the reasonableness of such an act to some extent?
We cannot allow such a tragedy to happen again. The perpetrators must be severely punished, not only to give justice to the victims' families, but also to serve as a warning to others and to maintain social justice and order.
This accident should be an opportunity for us to reflect together, to wake up from our apathy and to re-examine our behaviour and values. Let's work together to create a safer and more humane social environment where everyone can walk with peace of mind.
