Just got off the plane and went to the hospital! Sedentary and wary of fatal "economy class syndrome"

CCTV Beijing, October 16 (Reporter Zheng Jieyi) Mr. Zhang, who works for a Fortune 500 company, often needs to fly long distances due to work reasons. However, on the flight from Argentina to Shenzhen, Mr. Zhang suddenly felt difficulty breathing, chest tightness and chest pain, after getting off the plane, Mr. Zhang immediately went to the Chest Pain Center of the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University for medical treatment, and he was diagnosed with venous thromboembolism, which is also commonly known as "economy class syndrome". So, what is venous thromboembolism? If you don't fly, you won't get "economy class syndrome"? Who is more likely to be targeted by blood clots? Tang Yue, discipline leader of the Cardiovascular Center of the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and director of cardiovascular surgery, gave answers.

·“ If you come a little later, you may not be able to save your life! "Venous thromboembolism cannot be delayed.

Venous thromboembolism is a dangerous condition that is a collective term for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) of the lower extremities.

During the 20-hour flight, Mr. Zhang was sedentary in a small space, and his blood circulation slowed down. Sagging legs, difficulty in blood return in the lower limbs, blood stasis; At the same time, the water intake is reduced, which leads to hemoconcentration. Over time, the venous blood in the lower limbs will coagulate in the blood vessels and become blood clots. After thrombosis, pulmonary embolism occurs when it "flows" with venous blood circulation and "channels" to the pulmonary artery to block the blood vessels.

That's the horror of "economy class syndrome" – the inability of blood to exchange oxygen through the lungs. People will soon be life-threatening due to lack of oxygen, and in severe cases, death can occur within 1 to 2 hours!

Therefore, Mr. Zhang's dyspnea and chest pain are red flags of pulmonary embolism.

· If you don't fly, you won't get "economy class syndrome"?

Trauma, immobilization, tumors, pregnancy, etc., can cause the blood to be in a hypercoagulable state, increasing the risk of thrombosis.

· Venous thromboembolism has an insidious onset and rapid progression, and is known as the "silent killer".

According to the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 100,000 to 300,000 people die each year from venous thrombosis in the United States. In Europe, 500,000 people die every year from venous thrombosis, more than AIDS, breast and prostate cancer, and highway traffic accidents combined!

The incidence of venous thromboembolism in mainland China is also increasing year by year, and it has become one of the important causes of sudden death in young and middle-aged people.
