An energetic old man in an old-fashioned military uniform listens to an ophthalmologist explain the treatment of cataracts. The whole process lasted for more than an hour, and the old man sat upright, did not fall asleep, did not talk to others, and did not swipe his mobile phone. On the left chest of his military uniform is the words "Chinese People's Volunteer Army," and this old man is Tan Zhihong, a 91-year-old veteran of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

Tan Zhihong was born in Jinshan Village, Cangshuipu Town, Heshan District, Yiyang City, Hunan Province, after the outbreak of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, at the age of 17, he responded to the call of "Resisting US Aggression and Aiding Korea, Defending the Family and Defending the Country" to enlist in the army and became a scout of the independent reconnaissance company of the 191st Division of the 64th Army of the Volunteers. He has participated in more than 20 battles, large and small, and was awarded a third-class meritorious service for his outstanding performance in the battle.

After retiring from the army in 1957 and returning to his hometown, in order not to cause trouble to the organization, he politely refused the local government to arrange a job for him and chose to become an ordinary farmer. Later, upon the recommendation of the villagers, Tan Zhihong served as the captain of the militia, the accountant of the brigade, and the deputy secretary of the village general branch.

Although he has retired, his life is still very colorful, he took the initiative to join the national defense education propaganda team, often go to schools, township streets to tell some battle stories, very popular. He has a very strong personality, and now he still rides his bicycle out every day, and we are not allowed to follow him wherever he goes. But in the past two years, he didn't dare so much, because his eyes couldn't see clearly, so we said that he would take him to the hospital to get his eyes right, and he was very willing to do this, because he didn't want to be supported and supported by others. Tan Zhihong's youngest daughter told us.
