Combat background

On October 14, 1952, the United Nations army led by the United States began to attack the 597.9 Heights and 537.7 Beishan Highlands in Gyeongwha County, Gangwon Province, and the Battle of Shangganling began. Located on the Five Holy Mountains, Shangganling was the gate in the middle of the volunteer army's defensive line and a steel knife that penetrated the heart of the invading army. On a height of only 4 square kilometers, the "United Nations Army" has invested 60,000 troops, pouring 1.9 million shells and 5,000 aerial shells, up to 300,000 shells a day. The volunteer army also successively invested more than 40,000 troops and fired 400,000 shells. The grass and trees on the position were gone, and the rocky hill was beaten into a powder pile more than half a meter deep. The unprecedentedly tragic Battle of Shangganling set a record for the highest firepower density in the history of world warfare.

Huang Jiguang received special merit in the Battle of Shangganling

In the unimaginable rain of fire and bullets, the Chinese People's Volunteer Army was able to repel the Aggressors led by the United States, who had the most powerful firepower in the world, because there were countless heroes like Huang Jiguang in the Volunteer Army.

Heroic sacrifice

In the Battle of Shangganling, Huang Jiguang's battalion fought fiercely with the American army for 4 days and nights, and on the night of October 19, 1952, he was ordered to seize The 597.9 Heights west of Shangganling. Huang Jiguang came to the Sixth Company with the battalion chief of staff. After the Six-Link Company captured three positions, it was blocked by Position Zero. Position Zero has a group fire point of the US army, and in order to attack the hill, it is necessary to first destroy this fire point. The battalion chief of staff sent three consecutive groups of demolition teams, but the demolitionists were all killed or wounded during the impact. It was nearly dawn on the 20th, and if this fire point could not be quickly destroyed and the position of the main peak of Zero could be captured, the entire fighter would be delayed. The six companies suffered heavy casualties, and only a few people were able to participate in the attack.

Huang Jiguang used his body to block the enemy machine gun shots

At the critical moment, Huang Jiguang stepped forward and asked to take on the blasting mission. He wrote in his letter of determination: "Resolutely complete all the tasks entrusted by the superiors, strive to be heroes and join the party." The battalion chief of staff approved his request and ordered him to lead 2 soldiers on the task of breaking the fire point. Huang Jiguang led his comrades to rush up, destroying several enemy fire points in a row. 2 soldiers were killed, 1 was seriously wounded, and Huang Jiguang was also wounded in many places.

U.S. flares illuminated the positions, and several fire points crossed and strafed, blocking the road. Huang Jiguang was not afraid, taking advantage of the grenade explosion smoke, dragging the injured body to continue creeping forward. As you approach the central fire point of the U.S. Army, throw out the last grenade with force. The grenade exploded not far from the US army, the US military fire point was blown off half, the US machine gun suddenly stopped shooting, and Huang Jiguang was also stunned by this huge explosion. However, when the troops launched a charge, the remaining machine guns in the American fire point sounded again, firing wildly at the volunteer charge troops, and the attack of the troops was once again blocked. Huang Jiguang woke up from the sound of gunfire, but he had no ammunition, so he endured severe injuries and severe pain, climbed hard to the bunker hole, resolutely jumped up, opened his arms, pounced straight into the fire point, blocked the muzzle of the rifle that the US troops were strafing with his chest, and sacrificed his young life to clear the road for the troops to charge. Inspired by Huang Jiguang's heroic spirit, the troops quickly captured the Shangganling Heights, completely annihilating the two battalions of the US army guarding about 1,200 people.

When the comrades rushed to position Zero, they found that Huang Jiguang's body was still pressed against the enemy's firing hole, his hands were still firmly grasping the sacks around him, and his broad chest was still tightly blocked with the enemy's muzzle... The comrades-in-arms saw that Huang Jiguang's leg had been broken, there were seven serious injuries on his body, and there was a long blood mark behind him. After the sacrifice, Huang Jiguang's wounds did not bleed all over his body, and there was no blood in front of the bunker--the blood was all flowing on the road. It is conceivable that at the last moment, Huang Jiguang dragged his seriously injured body with such strong perseverance that he climbed to the enemy's bunker and jumped up again.
