After Jani's death, the body was taken to Ambaji, a town famous for its temples, where he built a small ashram. It is reported that his remains were memorialized for two days and then cremated.
Legends about Jani mention that he was blessed by the goddess as a child so that he could survive without eating or drinking, or even excrete, but medical professionals expressed skepticism that a person who could not walk for a long time without food or water would cause organ damage and collapse of the body.

In 2010, a team of military doctors observed Jani for two weeks at a hospital in Ahmedabad, monitoring his every move and scanning his organs, brain and blood vessels to check his heart, lungs and memory. Doctors then said That Jani did not eat, drink or go to the toilet, and that the only water he was exposed to was during regular gargling and bathing. Neuroscientist Sudhir Shah told reporters at the time that "we still don't know how he survived, it's a mystery".
However, the report mentions that the results of the study, sponsored by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation, have never been published or submitted for peer review.
