The Polio Laboratory of the Yunnan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention successfully passed the 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) Internal Identification of Poliovirus Type (ITD) and the Verification of Poliovirus Isolation Capacity

The Polio Laboratory of the Yunnan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention is a member of the WHO Global Polio Network Laboratory, which plays an important role in global polio eradication and maintenance of polio-free operations. In order to detect the import of wild poliovirus or the polio vaccine-derived virus (VDPV) and type II poliovirus in a timely manner, the polio laboratory has been carrying out poliovirus isolation of stool specimens of AFP cases in strict accordance with the acute flaccid paralysis (afp) case surveillance programme, and began to independently carry out poliovirus ITD and VDPV screening in 2012.

In order to assess the quality of the work of the polio laboratory network and to maintain and improve the sensitivity, timeliness and accuracy of laboratories throughout the network to detect poliovirus and VDPV, the WHO conducts an annual competency assessment of the members of the network laboratory. The polio laboratory of the Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention received 10 blind samples for internal identification of poliovirus types and 10 blind samples for isolation of poliovirus on 28 January 2021 and 13 April 2021 respectively. Inspectors Zhang Jie and Tang Jingjing operate in strict accordance with the standard procedures for the identification of poliotypes (version 4.0) and the standard procedures for the separation of polioviruses formulated by who, and feedback the results of intratype identification and virus isolation to the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Research (rivm) of the Netherlands (who global polio special reference laboratory) within the specified time limit of 7 working days and 14 working days respectively. On February 8, 2021 and April 30, 2021, the results of rivm were received: the polio laboratory of the Yunnan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention passed the 2020 annual ability verification with a full score of 100 points. This shows that the poliovirus surveillance system in Yunnan Province maintains a rapid, sensitive and accurate ability, providing reliable laboratory support for Yunnan to maintain a "polio-free" state.
