In 2008, May 12, the eighth day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar, is the Christmas Day of Shakyamuni Buddha.
On the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, Buddhist temples everywhere hold grand Buddhist bathing ceremonies, praying for the Buddha's blessing of society, eliminating disasters, and inviting altars to speak and preach.
On the same day, Master Su Quan, the abbot of Shifang Luohan Temple, was on the way to Chengdu Daci Temple, when he suddenly saw the birds in the sky migrating sharply, and the snakes, insects, rats, and ants on the road were not crouching underground as usual, but were running rampant in the streets, and the animals were anxious to leave and couldn't help but think of a word - escape!
Seeing this anomalous phenomenon, Master Su Quan immediately decided to return to the Shifang Luohan Monastery.
In the evening, Master Su Quan rushed back to the temple. Luohan Temple, with its ancient mortise and tenon structure and its distance from the epicenter of the earthquake, has become a less affected place in Shifang City.
At this time, hundreds of victims had poured into the temple, and the monks temporarily placed the victims in the vacant space behind the temple, and donated all their quilts and clothes, hoping that the injured victims could keep warm.
As groups of victims came to resettle, two opinions slowly arose among the monks:
Some monks believe that more victims can be placed, the Luohan Temple is already somewhat damaged, not to mention that there are more and more people, it is not easy to manage, the temple is an ancient temple, it is very easy to fire, Suzhou Hanshan Temple is not a lesson from the past?
Other monks believe that when monks study Buddhist practice, they are practicing equanimity and compassion, and that saving suffering and distress is exactly what monks should do.
Faced with the two positions in the temple, Master Su Quan immediately convened a meeting of monks in the open space in front of the Daxiong Treasure Hall and announced three "unconditionals":
Unconditional reception of disaster victims;
Unconditional provision of daily necessities;
Unconditionally open warehouses to provide demand for disaster victims.
After listening to these three unconditional, the monks in the temple who held opinions opposing the victims' entry into the monastery put away their speculative and suspicious hearts, and began to work with the other monks to carry out the affairs of the resettlement of the victims. At this moment, the temple welcomed a group of "uninvited guests".
Gui Fengchun, president of the Shifang Maternal and Child Health Hospital, led more than thirty pregnant women and medical staff who were about to be born in the basin to evacuate the maternal and child health care hospital, which had been designated as a dangerous building, hoping to deliver pregnant women at the relatively safe Luohan Temple.
In the temple that had just subsided, a different voice came out, "Pregnant women enter the temple, there is blood light, the temple abstains from blood light, how can pregnant women be put in this temple?" ”
Master Su Quan had only one answer to this voice: "Human life is greater than the sky, and there is no taboo compared to human life." ”
He immediately set about to place pregnant women in the fasting room, because in the event of an aftershock, the wooden structure of the fasting room would obviously suffer the least damage.
In this way, the temple became a hospital, and the Zen room became a delivery room. A dining table, two Zen stools turned into operating tables, flashlights were surgical lamps, and at 7:36 on May 13, the first baby after the earthquake was born in the thousand-year-old temple. Master Su Quan named her Tang Zhenwen.
Over the next three months, new life was born, 1, 2, 10, 100, 108
From May 13, 2008 to August 1, 2008, a total of 108 small lives were born at the Luohan Temple, and there happened to be 108 Arhats on the murals of the Luohan Temple, and the people of Shifang City affectionately called them "Luohanwa".
The doll is born, but what about the nutrition of the doll? If the pregnant women did not replenish their nutrients in time after giving birth, the children would not have food, and Master Su Quan immediately made another decision: to cook meat for the mother in the temple.
It should be known that the monastery where the bhikkhus practiced was to abstain from killing and meat, and such a decision was openly opposed by some lay people in the temple at that time, but Master Su Quan withstood the pressure and insisted that the mother should keep up with nutrition.
The monk in charge of cooking meat had not eaten meat for too long, and when he smelled the smell of meat, he began to vomit, so Master Su Quan went up to take over and continued to cook.
In order to solve the problem of the pregnant women's postpartum rest, Master Su Quan also disassembled the rain canopy that covered the Buddha statue and assembled it into a tent for the pregnant women to rest, despite the objections of the people.
Worried that the outside world would not be able to understand the real situation in the disaster area, luohan temple sent hundreds of messages to the phoenix network, the State Administration of Religious Affairs, and the Buddhist Association of China through text messages, and they firmly believed that relying on the strength of the Buddhist public and all sectors of society will definitely help the disaster area tide over the difficulties.
In the more than three months since the disaster, the Buddhist community came to Shifang through various channels and gave a large amount of selfless assistance to the people in the disaster area. All things have causes, which is one of the reasons why the 108 Arhats can create miracles of life.

On May 12, 2009, the Shifang Municipal Government decided to celebrate a lively collective birthday for these 108 children, and Jiang Mingzhong, vice mayor of Shifang City, believed that these 108 dolls carried the catastrophe and great love, and their smiling faces represented the life and hope of the disaster area.
Celebrating the birthday of these 108 dolls is to relive the shining love and hope of the Chinese nation when it has passed through difficult times.
However, only 107 of the 108 dolls came on this day, who was she? And why didn't you come to the scene to celebrate your birthday?
The doll who failed to come to the scene to celebrate her birthday is xiao Zixuan, and she is the little ten in "Luo Hanwa". On May 15, 2008, Zi Xuan was born on a Zen bench at Luohan Temple.
Mother Huang Qili, father Xiao Shiyong, because of the arrival of new life, ignited infinite hope, even if not long ago they were still immersed in the haze of the earthquake, they could not help but begin to look forward to the beautiful future of Zixuan.
In early May 2009, Zi Xuan was diagnosed with congenital heart disease.
The high cost of treatment made Zi Xuan's parents difficult, and Zi Xuan's mother would secretly cry when no one was there in the middle of the night, asking God why she successfully gave birth to Zi Xuan in that earthquake, but did not give Zi Xuan a healthy body.
Zi Xuan's father kept looking for someone to raise the cost of surgery from the moment he knew about Zi Xuan's condition, but his friends around him were all fellow villagers, and the results of everyone's years of hard work in this land were all wiped out in an instant, who had extra money to borrow?
The ignorant Zi Xuan did not understand the helplessness of his parents, he would still bloom a cute smile, and the luck of the girl who loved to laugh would not be too bad.
On the evening of May 4, 2009, after learning of Xiao Xuanxuan's illness and urgent need for help, the Phoenix Network Chinese Buddhism issued an appeal to save Xiao Xuanxuan for the first time.
The next day, Xiao Xuanxuan's condition deteriorated and he was in urgent need of surgery.
At this time of life at stake, the kind Phoenix netizens and compassionate Buddhist laymen extended their warm hands to Xiao Xuanxuan, and in just two days, more than 80,000 yuan of donations were remitted to the designated account for the rescue of Xuan xuan.
On May 7, Xuanxuan underwent minimally invasive cardiac intervention at Chengdu Huaxi Maternity and Children's Hospital. Xiao Xuanxuan's surgery was very successful, but further observation and treatment were needed after the operation, so there were 108 Collective Birthdays of Luo Hanwa, and only one was missing.

Xiao Zixuan not only created the miracle of life but also the miracle of the phoenix. She became the beautiful baby of the Phoenix people, and became an auspicious angel who was reborn in nirvana in the flames.
Three years later, the children born in the Luohan Temple and their parents appeared in the Luohan Temple again, and the parents cut out a piece of cloth in each child's intimate clothes and made a "hundred clothes" and gave it to Master Su Quan to repay him for saving him that day.
This hundred garments are a garment of merit, which records the master of good life, who opens the door of goodness and protects every little life born; it is also a fearless cloak, which records the fearless mage who faces natural disasters and rumors and guards everyone who enters the temple.
Before the children go to school, every year the parents will take the children back to the Luohan Temple for a group birthday, and after the children go to school, considering that the school and some families live farther away, there is no more group birthday.
The reunion of Luo Hanwa was in 2018, when the materials for the movie "One Hundred and Eight" were provided, and the teenagers in the outer fu years returned to the Luohan Temple and gathered together, and the ten-year-olds had some colorful dreams.
Tang Zhenwen grew up hoping to become a doctor and save lives and help the injured;
Luo Mingzhenxi wants to be the host of a children's show and invites 107 other friends to join her show;
Fu Zihang wants to build a lot of very beautiful and very stable houses;
Sun Yifei wanted to paint a painting with 108 different flowers...
The open space on the west side of the Luohan Temple is now a tea garden, next to which stands a monument to the birth of one hundred and eight Luohanwa, on which the names of "Luohanwa" are engraved in the order of birth, 9 columns and 12 rows, exactly 108.
Now many parents still take their children back to visit the monks of Shifang Luohan Monastery and bring them watermelons grown at home.
Master Su Quan said that he was very relieved to see the children grow up healthily.
<h1 class= "pgc-h-center-line" >03 The Buddhist gate "breaks the vows", and the Luohan Temple produces a true arhat</h1>
After the birth of the 108 baby, a reporter interviewed Master Su Quan, who said that he hesitated at that time, because the temple had already accommodated two thousand victims, but pregnant women could not be placed in the wind and rain, so he only hesitated for a moment, and he agreed.
Within half an hour, the temple door was opened and the transfer of all pregnant women was completed, and Gui Fengchun, the director of the Maternal and Child Health Hospital at that time, was very touched, and she was originally worried about whether the monks were willing to accept pregnant women, after all, there were more taboos in the temple, but Master Su Quan's actions dispelled all her concerns.
Later, for the nutrition of pregnant women, Master Su Quan also took the lead in sitting in the canteen to watch over the ingredients, first allowing pregnant women to eat, followed by medical staff, and finally monks.
Because of the shortage of supplies after the earthquake, sometimes the monks could not eat, so the monks sat quietly in the open space in front of the Daxiong Treasure Hall and prayed to the Buddha to bless everyone after the disaster.
Since then, the Luohan Monastery has successively broken the vows - meat, blood, killing, and the monks kneel in front of the Buddha and chant and pray, but they have never regretted it.
In fact, this is not the first time that the Luohan Temple has broken the vows for great love.
In 1942, when the country was in trouble, Master Taixu, who was then the abbot of the Luohan Monastery in Shifang City, called on Buddhists throughout the country to take action and jointly resist the war, and even summoned the monks in the temple to participate in the war and defend their homeland.
The Buddha said that you should not kill, but there is also a saying that killing is to stop killing, killing people is to be rewarded, and at the same time, it is also blessed to save people because of killing.
Some people have also questioned the rationality of killing to stop killing, and the senior monk Master QiFu said a sentence: "When the country is in trouble, the puppeteer has the responsibility, and killing is to protect life." "There has been no one with a beak since.
The spirit of compassion of Da Yong, Da Zhi and Da Ren has always been the unchangeable sect style of Luohan Temple, so when the disaster came, the monks did not hesitate to do their best to send charcoal in the snow.
When the monks meditate on an empty stomach, it is still raining lightly in the sky, and they do not have tents, because their tents are shielding the victims from the wind and rain, and they do not have thick clothes, because their clothes are warming the victims.
But they seem to be not afraid of wind and rain, not afraid of the cold of spring, and only blindly chanting prayers. Raindrops fell on them, and under the reflection of the skylight, it seemed to cover them with a layer of brilliance, and the sky was getting darker, but their hearts were always bright.
Just as the lotus lamp in the temple is always on, illuminating the way home for the lost; lighting the flame of hope for those in disaster; illuminating this world full of great love for the coming life.
Later, through contact with the outside world, rescue supplies were successively sent to the temple's warehouse after avoiding the aftershocks.
In order to prevent the occurrence of unclear inventory of supplies or impersonation of the collar, Master Su Quan, as the host, carried the key to the warehouse with him.
According to the famous film and television actor Wu Jing, in order to manage the materials, the abbot at that time carried half a mountain and carried half a warehouse on his body.
Thanks to Master Su Quan's immediate decision, the material dispatch during the entire disaster relief period was carried out in an orderly manner. Each victim received his or her own supplies.
After that, Luo Hanwa was born one after another, and whenever a child was born, Master Su Quan would wear a prayer bead to record it and pray for the child's health and safety.
When all the children were born, there were exactly one hundred and eight rosary beads on the rosary of Master Su Quan, and the one hundred and eight arhats among the arhats, His Holiness Lei Yin, also had one hundred and eight rosary beads.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama, also known as the Protector of TheRava, recorded in the Shushu Baizhang Qinggui Shamiddu that there is the land of Garan, the gain of might, the protector of the Dharma, and there is no difficulty.
Protector of the Dharma, there is no difficulty, does this not correspond to Master Su Quan? He guarded the Dharma order, obeyed the compassionate heart, protected the suffering people, and did not encounter difficulties, is not the Arhat Temple a true arhat?
Master Su Quan, who accepted the victims at the cost of breaking his vows, is still in good spirits, full of calm and joy in his conversation, and everyone feels compassionate and easy-going.
Master Su Quan lamented in his blog post that the world is impermanent, and when 108 children grow up, perhaps he is dying of old age and has limited mobility, or perhaps he has gone to the Pure Land of the West.
But no matter where he is in the future, he will always bless these 108 children, pray that the Buddha will bless the children with health and auspiciousness, and hope that they will study hard when they grow up, become useful talents in society, and live up to the love of heaven and earth and the love of all sentient beings.
It is this kind of great love that has created the Chinese miracle that belongs to China again and again.
Today's Luohan Temple has returned to its pre-disaster appearance, and the four characters of "Nishikawa Buddha Capital" on the wall in front of the temple shine brightly. Maitreya Buddha in the temple laughed loudly, as if there was nothing to worry about, the Buddha in the Great Treasure Hall, the Dharma Phase was still solemn and majestic, but he was also smiling and smiling at the world's chances.
The medical staff of the Shifang Maternal and Child Health Hospital, who also formed a Buddhist relationship after the earthquake, would go to the Luohan Temple from time to time to deliver rice and oil to the monks in the temple, and would also regularly check them out.
Thirteen years have passed since the disaster, and only great love is still flowing in the world.
Although the Luohan Monastery breaks the vows, it explains what compassion is, and perhaps the law sometimes restricts our choices, but it cannot stop our decisions.
