(Originated in the British Stafford Bull Terrier)

In 1936, the dog was registered as a Stafford Terrier in the AKC's genealogy. It was renamed the American Stafford Terrier on January 1, 1972, because a new type of Stafford Terrier was developed that was different from the Stafford Bull Terrier in England, and a new name was given to distinguish the two.
