On January 20, 1984, China and Argentina played in the Nehru Gold Cup, and the Argentine team at that time was the main team except Maradona. Short-footed tiger Zhao Dayu scored with a low left-footed shot in the 86th minute to help China win 1-0.
It was also the only time in the history of China and Argentina that they had met, and two and a half years later, Maradona led Argentina to win the World Cup in Mexico.
In March 2015, Zhao Dayu died of illness at the age of 55.
