The 2021 China Jinan Wu Tianming Youth Film Summit will be held in Jinan from November 11 to November 15. The main activities of this summit are composed of Sunac, theme forums, theme lectures and theme screenings. Among them, the 20 projects of Sunac Were reviewed by 12 projects for more than two months, and nearly 400 projects were selected.
Based on the selection mechanism of taking into account the market orientation of commercial types and the artistic expression of strong authorship, the shortlisted film projects this year cover a wide range of themes, in addition to regular family ethics, youth growth, romantic comedy, crime suspense and other individualized writing, as well as urban fantasy, historical war, ethnic minorities and other topics with social care and modern thinking.
After the review meeting, the foundation invited Mr. Zhang Hongyi, who served as one of the reviewers of this project, to write a project note, and at the same time, the 20 projects shortlisted for the Sunac Conference were introduced and explained, and friends in the industry were invited to come to discuss cooperation.
It is a special honor to participate in the judging of the director project of the 2021 Wu Tianming Youth Film Summit. For the venture capital review, I have always been "selfish", on the one hand, I naturally hope to discover some potential film projects and young directors, it is best to have the opportunity to use for myself, on the other hand, I will enjoy the collision and exchange of ideas with other judges on the film itself. Sometimes, there is an urgent need to wake up, refresh, and get on the head.
The word venture capital, I always feel that it should be discussed separately. "Creation" is always a process that can be continuously improved in terms of the film itself, and "investment" is actually no more than three hammers because it involves capital. Therefore, "whether to vote" and "how to vote", I think this is the terminal goal that any film festival in the world needs to face and is eager to monetize. At this Sunac meeting, Yan Yanjie and Shi Yanjie most likely racked their brains for the word "vote", and did not hesitate to "torture" the judging team. We not only need to read all the project books, scripts, and director's elaborations, but also really have to carefully watch the long short films shot by the shortlisted directors in the past (because we need to count points), for several days and nights, I really see my liver trembling! Well, the process of bursting liver, the effect came, according to the conventional operation, we selected the appropriate item. Equally important, we see "people" who are not necessarily good at textual creation, but have the potential to grow into professional directors within the industrial system. In this way, during the final roadshow and interview, you can "invest" in the project, you can also "vote" for people, try not to buy losses, can not buy deceived. I just hope that the foundation will prepare some liver protection tablets for next year's judging teachers.
Logically, I should recommend this year's venture capital's favorite work. I looked at the final shortlist and found that it was not needed. In fact, good projects are very consistent with everyone. At the beginning, the full day of offline review process, coupled with the chicken blood rendering before the stone review meeting, made me really think that I had to break my head and argue with the other seven review teachers! As a result, the first half of the hour was tense, the second half of the hour was serious, and as soon as the discussion situation opened, only unity and liveliness remained. In the final shortlisted excellent director projects, 60% of them were almost collectively approved, 25% were able to quickly reach a consensus, and the remaining 15% really needed to collide artistic concepts and convince each other. And those projects that guess the taste of venture capital and are packaged deliberately to invest in their favorite projects are often easy for us to see, and we really hope that there will be fewer such projects in the future. For young directors, their first and second films, to get something real, sincerity and original intention are always the most important. We, as venture capitalist judges, are cups of goji berry barley water, detoxifying, removing dampness and degreasing grease for creators and future investors.
Of course, by participating in the activities of this year's Wu Tianming Youth Film Summit, we can also observe some current and even future domestic young film directors' ecology and creative trends. For example, more and more international students from foreign film and television majors return to China to engage in film creation, and they themselves as individuals are walking between different styles - short films shot abroad are often more genres and richer topics, and the film projects of returning to China venture capital are more artistic and independent. Diversity is welcome. In time, if they can find a film creation path that is truly suitable for them, the future can be expected. For example, female directors, the corresponding female topic film venture capital is also increasing. Look at cannes and Venice not long ago, which obviously echoes the trend of the world. It's better to echo the trend than to catch up, and I hope that more and better female directors and projects can take the first step from here.
Finally, I would like to mention a little personal regret: at least in the projects I have seen, realistic, magical, black humor, criminal, romantic, and even stop-motion animation, etc., in a variety of genres and styles, but almost all end up falling back to the emotional expression of individual, private, self-reflexive or family relationships, with too little reflection on social issues and the collective. That's why I defended a project about the emotional problems of the elderly during the judging process. I'm not saying that individual expression doesn't matter, I just want younger filmmakers to be a little braver.
Because of my work during this time, I stayed more in Hengdian, a place with the world's largest film and television shooting base. Within ten kilometers of the window where this note was written, there were probably dozens of dramas filming in full swing, and it is likely that nearly half of the current domestic A-list stars were concentrated. A few days ago, I wanted to see Jia Zhangke's new film, and there was no row of films in the only two cinemas in Hengdian.
