The Queen of Spades is a masterpiece of Alexander Pushkin's short stories, and I was deeply impressed by his creativity, imagination and ability to organize plots. Pushkin's work on long and short narrative poems, short stories, and fairy tales is simply romantic.
The first time I knew that "The Queen of Spades" was on the stall of the world's literary masterpieces, and at that time I couldn't even figure out who Pushkin was. Like most people, I first learned about the sun of Russian poetry in the junior high school textbooks "If Life Deceives You" and "The Story of the Fisherman and the Goldfish." The latter's unique fairy tale poetry impressed me greatly.
The reason why I decided to read "Queen of Spades" came from reading Ms. Saito Chiho's manga "Pushkin's Angel". The comic recounts Pushkin's romantic, amorous and contradictory life, and I am amazed by the eerie and grotesque storyline of his work Queen of Spades.

This was my first exposure to Queen of Spades.
Later, when looking for the movie "Queen of Spades", I accidentally found that the opera of "Queen of Spades" from a long time ago, the character shape in it was very restored, and Saito Chiho also referred to this high-quality opera when portraying the character image of "Queen of Spades".

The opera is all raw meat in Russian, but I have no obstacles when watching it, which is already familiar with the plot. All the actors fit as well as they came out of the pages of Pushkin's novels, and their facial expressions, body language, and world-wide musical accompaniment are a classic of a generation. This opera, created more than half a century ago, is still shocking today. The exaggerated interpretation of the male protagonist's demonic possession, as well as the pure but powerful shouting of the female protagonist, all bear a distinct brand of the times. That feeling will never happen again.

The Queen of Spades focuses on three characters: the male protagonist Herman, the female protagonist Lisa Vita, and the old countess.
Pushkin was extremely talented in creating characters with distinct personalities.

Herman, who has a bright appearance, has the style of Napoleon Bonaparte, and he is really a person who is easy to make women move. Although Napoleon lost the war in Russia, his glorious image deeply infected a generation. A man like Hermann, who resembled Napoleon, had to spark the imagination of the girls, feeling that he was the embodiment of the Emperor of France.
But in reality? Herman is a miser who is very good at gambling but is reluctant to take a penny to the table. His mind is full of terrible money! money! money! Even he dreamed of cards, green tables, piles of bills, and piles of gold coins. What is even more incredible is that at a young age, he was willing to paste an old countess who was enough to be his grandmother in order to get a large sum of money after the secret points of the cards. There are many literary works that show the obsession of money, but there are not many things like Herman who can scare an old woman with a bad heart to death for a sum of money.
Herman was not completely without conscience, he was also uneasy about his deception of Lisa Vita, and he was terrified and saddened that the old lady had died because of her own intimidation. But all this guilt vanished with the points he thought he had dreamed of. Herman, who keeps winning money at the table, is like a mad dog, he is ugly and sings loudly (I have to admit that the opera singer is too good), until the last card of the Queen of Spades buries all his money, Herman goes crazy (in the opera he shoots himself).
People often hear the phrase "slave to money," and Herman most appropriately describes it. His love, his life is not important, the money is gone, and his ghost of being dependent on money will dissipate.

Lisa is a purely affectionate girl, but she belongs to the Cinderella of the social world, too inconspicuous and too unobtrusive. Her little world was only the old countess's saddle before and after the horse, and the life under the fence was boring and miserable.
The girl who is generally inconspicuous in old boots is naturally both frightened and excited about the man's sudden courtship, and the unworldly Lisa revels in Herman's false love letters and brings the man into the house.
While Lisa was contributing her enthusiasm, the old countess was dead. Only then did she realize that Herman was pursuing her only in order to get close to the old countess, to plot card points and property. The failure of love and the death of her benefactor make Lisa grief- and guilt and fear make her worse off than dead.
The original Lisa married after everything was over. But in the opera, in order to highlight her tragic fate, Lisa commits suicide by throwing herself into the water because she cannot bear the condemnation of her conscience. Poor woman, in fact, she is not very serious fault. Lisa was simply unsophisticated into a love trap, and although she herself had not been seriously hurt, she had been devastated by the death of the Countess. All this proves that Lisa is a very kind person, but in this unfortunate position can only go with the flow.

The image of the old countess is the most grotesque and eerie, and she tells Herman that the secret of the so-called three cards is just a nonsense. But it doesn't matter if the three cards are real or fake, the very existence of the story adds to the mystery of the old lady.
In all the portrayals of the old countess, Pushkin did not hesitate to describe her as dying of old age, and readers across the pages of the novel could smell the smell of mummification and decay.
After the death of the old countess, Hermann, who had dreamed of being her lover, was mistaken for the illegitimate son of the old lady by the funeral guests, all of which made the funeral both ironic and ridiculous.
Personally, despite the exaggeration of literary portrayal, Herman saw the dead old woman open her eyes and the old woman tell him that the three cards were his own hallucinations and fantasies, because he took it all too seriously. As for the reason why the old woman ghost asked him to marry Lisa, it came from Herman's guilt for Lisa.
Dreams are not reality after all.
Herman eventually dies on the three-card Queen of Spades, and what really kills him is not the old countess but his own heart.
