The origin of each place's place name usually has a story, or what it means, and The name of Maoming comes from a Taoist monk.
Legend has it that in the last years of the Western Jin Dynasty, a Taoist monk named Pan Maoming in the Gaozhou region learned the poems of Yiming to cure diseases and save people. After that, he lived forever and flew by stone boat to Xishan (present-day Guanshan). Later, in honor of him, people named Mao the place where he had been.
Historically, the origin of today's Maoming city name, Panzhou County and Maoming County, are related to Chen Xiangyin.
Pan Maoming, commonly known as Pan County, Guangdong Province, is an immortal celebrity of later generations. One of the pioneers of Lingnan Taoism, he is known as the first Taoist priest in western Guangdong.
In the Ming Dynasty, Cao Zhiyu and others compiled the "Chronicle of Gaozhou Fu": "There is Pan Maoming in Jin Yongjia, who enters the mountain and plays chess with Taoist masters, and stands for a long time. The Taoist priest said, "Does the Son know that too?" He said, "Into the sinus of the snake, go away like a goose." "As the saying goes: the parietal bone runs through the birth gate, the life cycle is the same day and the same month, the brain blood is not reduced, the heart shadow is not biased, and the practice can be done rashly. Huang Jing was granted the Immortal Prescription, and then rose to the top of the Dongshan Alchemy.
At that time, Pan Maoming refined the elixir and relieved the plague disaster, thus saving many lives.
Gaozhou Hangbang Mausoleum, also known as Maoling Tomb, and the remains of Pan Maoming. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, the Gaozhou Chronicle recorded: "Pan Maoming's alchemy is hereditary, lush with grass and trees, and evergreen in all seasons. "Zhao Jiquan on this mountain, in the water at dusk, took dantian branches, boiled white chalcedony, cut the young branches of bamboo shoots, ate the kernels of the seeds, washed away the dust, took the essence, and removed the dregs", Pan Maoming finally turned it into "big dan" and "small dan".
Legend has it that Pan Maoming also used galangal medicine, and so far, Pan Maoming's gentle elixir method is still popular in the folk.
At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, Qu Dajun, one of the "Three Great Figures of Lingnan", wrote in Xinyu, Guangdong: "There is a stone boat in Panxianpo, Gaozhou. Moderately contaminated with a small number of lotus leaves at both ends. Eight and a half feet long and four feet wide. Another stone pillar, in the Cloud Furnace Cave, was two feet long. Legend has it that Pan Maoming is a real relic.

Pan Maoming is no longer there, but he has left behind many relics and memorial buildings built for him by later generations.
For example, the earliest Taoist building in Guanshan, Gaozhou, is the Shengzhen Temple. According to the "Supplement to the Guanshan Stele Chronicle", "The Temple of Guanshan temple was rebuilt in the middle of the Fen Fan Tao: Guan Shan in the western half of GaoJun City. It is said that the golden plate arose here, and the ancient concept of Sheng Zhen got its name. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, we began to observe the abolition of the Ming Dynasty.
There are Panxian Temple and qing Dynasty Jiaqing "Maoming County Chronicle" record that on the east side of Sendai Temple in Gaozhou City, it is said that Pan Maoming came here to practice alchemy. It was built by The Ming Dynasty Zhifu Kong Yong in the first year of Chenghua. The Xianpo Ji and Xianmiao Pavilion established by Chongzhen in the ming dynasty for Xu Xueshao in Maoming County in the first year.
In the past decade, Yao Jishun of Gaozhou City has expanded the pavilion and built it into a slope. Now the pavilion is paved. Later, Panxian Temple was built here. The temple corridor is connected to Sendai Temple.
Now it is a cultural relics protection unit of Gaozhou City. In the Qing Dynasty, Pan Gongchen, a general of Yanren and Leizhou in Hebei Province, wrote a poem called "Youshan in Huaipan County": "Officials steal seagull leagues, and occasionally hang bows and walk stones." Pine-topped cranes nest deep in trees, and fishing boats on the river smoke in the evening. When the old mountain people went to admire the flowers, the old temple was full of rainwater. When Taoism met its ancestors in the year, Yunfeng swept across xicheng with a wave of his hand.
There are many literati and inkers in the past, and they also chant Shizhou Danzao. Just like Zheng Fuyi's Ming poem: "Danzao has no fairy chickens and dogs, and no embers." Where can traces of the past and the present be found, the dark and lonely villages have faint tobacco and barren tobacco. Pan Xian asked where is Penglai?
It can be seen that this Pan Maoming Daoist priest won the hearts of the people, so people's admiration and worship for him have not been eliminated for thousands of years. It has even been praised all the time.
According to records, Maoming County was founded in the eighteenth year of the Sui Dynasty. In order to commemorate Pan Maoming's kindness to the people of western Guangdong, it was named Pan Maoming. In the eighth year of the Tang Dynasty, Zhenguan was renamed Nanmi Prefecture (Zhenguan was renamed Gaozhou to Nanmi Prefecture after six years). Today's Maoming city name also comes from this.
In China, only one person named Pan Mao appeared in the name of Taoists, prefecture-level, county-level cities.
Today, Pan Maoming is gone, and Maoming still exists and is prosperous. Nowadays, Maoming has a pleasant climate and is quite good in all aspects. Some people even say that Mao celebrities will get rich. Such good feng shui may have been made by Pan Maoming's Taoist priest, and he never knew it.
