A few days ago, Hyundai Motor signed a NEXO intention purchase agreement with Guangzhou Hengyun Group.
Behind the seemingly unremarkable news is another stroke of the Guangzhou Municipal Government's development of hydrogen energy.
What is the NEXO?
Hyundai is currently selling the best hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. So far, its global sales have exceeded 20,000 vehicles, and South Korea accounts for more than half of them.
This is not the first time that Guangzhou has invested in the hydrogen energy industry.
As early as July 2020, the Guangzhou government issued a statement on the "Guangzhou Hydrogen Energy Industry Development Plan" that 100 hydrogen refueling stations would be built by 2030.
In March this year, Hyundai Motor's first overseas fuel cell plant, HTWO, landed in Guangzhou, covering an area of 207,000 square kilometers, and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2022. The plant, wholly owned by Hyundai Motor, is responsible for the production and sales of hydrogen fuel cell systems and plans to produce 6,500 hydrogen fuel cell modules per year.
In 2030, the layout of 100 hydrogen refueling stations, the construction of HTWO Guangzhou factory, and the introduction of modern NEXO are all the layout of the Guangzhou Municipal Government in the hydrogen energy industry.
The infrastructure is already in place, and the next step is to bring in the car.
As a result, Guangzhou Hengyun signed an intention to purchase nexo China version with Hyundai Motor.
Guangzhou Hengyun is an energy-based state-owned enterprise that has been listed, the largest heating group in Guangzhou and the second largest power generation group.
After talking about the policy news, let's talk about this car.
Hyundai NEXO is Hyundai Motor's second-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, which was mass-produced and delivered in 2018.
So compared to its brother IONIQ, it doesn't look as futuristic as IONIQ.
Since 2019, the Hyundai NEXO has made its debut in China, but it was not until this year that the opportunity for the car to appear gradually became more frequent.
Because Hyundai launched the Chinese version for NEXO, it is intended to speed up the layout in China.
Since the beginning of this year, it has successively appeared at the World New Energy Vehicle Conference, the Expo and the Guangzhou Auto Show.
Just a few days ago, this car got a temporary license plate and officially opened a road test on the domestic public road.

Hyundai NEXO claims to be hydrogenated in 5 minutes and has a range of 500+ kilometers. NEXO's CLTC range at full hydrogen is 596 km. But in practice, the maximum hydrogenation can only be 94%, that is, the endurance is 561 kilometers.
From the perspective of test driving NEXO, hydrogen energy fuel vehicles and pure electric vehicles are not much different in driving, and operations such as starting parking are relatively simple.
Equipped with a side and rear blind zone display system, when the turn signal is hit, the driving screen automatically calls up the incoming traffic situation behind the side in the corresponding direction.
There are two paddles on both sides of the steering wheel, which can be switched by paddles to "increase" energy recovery, and the car immediately slows down and responds very timely.
Hidden under the cover is a hydrogen fuel cell system with HTWO printed on it.
This HTWO power heart will be produced by the HTWO plant in Guangzhou in the future. Yes, it is the first overseas battery system factory built by Hyundai in Guangzhou as mentioned earlier in the article.
The most obvious difference in entering the car is the entire row of physical buttons below the central control screen.
Generally, new forces are more inclined to be fully electronic, and hyundai NEXO still retains the characteristics of traditional fuel vehicles in this regard.
As a new energy vehicle for green travel, Hyundai NEXO is a walking air purifier.
The car is equipped with a three-stage air purification system that can remove 99.9% of the respirable particulate matter from the air, which not only responds to the call for zero emissions, but also achieves "negative" emissions.
According to the National Academy of Forestry sciences in South Korea, if 10,000 NEXOs are on the road, 20,000 particulate matter can be purified, and a hyundai NEXO that travels 20,000 kilometers a year can reduce carbon emissions by 25,000 tons per year, equivalent to the carbon absorption of 2,500 square meters of pine forests.
What are the emissions? Only pure water can be drunk.
The principle of modern NEXO drives is that the hydrogen in the hydrogen storage tank and the oxygen in the air act to generate electricity to drive the vehicle, so the only thing that is emitted is water.
In the morning, from the Xifang compound in Panyu to the science center of The University Town, drive more than 20 kilometers, click on the H2O Output on the car, you can discharge pure water, more than half a cup.
Teacher Wu, who explained hydrogen energy to us, showed that this water can really be "drunk".
Say what you feel.
Hydrogen energy has been particularly loud in the past year, especially in the two car companies promoted by Japan's Toyota and South Korea's Hyundai.
I have to say that after the test drive of the Hyundai NEXO, I admit that it is a "very clean" new energy vehicle.
But what about mass production?
Today's hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are like pure electric vehicles in 2017, there is no complete energy replenishment system, and the cost of energy transportation and generation is also extremely high.
According to incomplete statistics, the number of hydrogen refueling stations that have been built in China is only 81.
Even in Europe, where the commercial degree of hydrogen energy is more mature, there are still car owners who say that the cost of hydrogenation is too high.
To mass-produce passenger cars or commercial vehicles, cost is key.
This is also one of the reasons why pure electric vehicles have been selling better and better in recent years, in addition to policy-driven, low energy replenishment costs are key factors.
Therefore, whether it is a hyundai NEXO or Toyota's Mirai, if you want to sell to C, you still need to wait for the Chinese market to mature.
