The new Audi A5 Coupe 35TFSI: The rise of the coupe

The Audi A5 has an extensive lineup of coupes, convertibles and Sportback versions, as well as powerful S5 and RS5 high-performance models. Then, when you decide on your body shape, you need to choose from a variety of trims, engines, and of course options.

But no matter which car you end up buying, one factor is guaranteed – it will provide miles of enjoyable driving experience with plenty of high-end technology to explore and plenty of standard safety equipment to explore.

It faces backlash from German automakers BMW and Mercedes, but the A5 Coupe can certainly compete at the highest level.

manifestation

The Audi A5 Coupe is available in Sport, S line, Black Edition and Vorsprung trim levels with the option of a powerful and efficient powertrain.

We chose the entry-level sport version powered by a 2.0-liter petrol engine that delivers 150ps and 270Nm of torque. The car is the least powerful in the lineup, going from stationary to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds and top speeding at 130.5 mph.

The acceleration of the block is not very fast, but it is indeed good enough, and the performance across the board is also impressive. The seven-speed automatic S tronic transmission is perfectly synchronized with the steering wheel paddles, so you can shift gears manually.

There are driving modes called Comfort, Automatic, Dynamic and Personal that change the characteristics of the car by dynamically improving shift, throttle, braking and steering response.

The A5 Coupe is great for cruising at 70 mph on the highway, but can also make a nice shift when faced with more tested country lanes. It's over two meters wide and sometimes does feel wide, especially on narrow B-roads. But with a lot of sensors and reversing cameras, it's easy to navigate through the busy city center, and the light steering is good to improve agility.

Ride handling

The Design of the Audi A5 Coupe looks sporty and is sure to deliver impressive performance on open roads. The grip is confident and there is little physical movement during sharp bends. There are more exciting models to drive, but it's worth remembering that we're testing the least powerful (and cheapest) version. Upgrade to a product like S5 or RS5 and the amazing factor is immediate.

The A5 Coupe has a low center of gravity, good balance, and direct steering provides a lot of feedback.

The five-link front and rear axle suspensions do a great job of eliminating creases on the road, but you'll feel the full power of any unexpected pothole.

As with Audi's approach, the A5 Coupe's thermal insulation is excellent, so passengers are protected from road tire rumbles, wind noise or engine noise. Our bike rides on perfectly matched 18-inch wheels. A little bigger, the improvements suffer, and the quality of the ride will be less impressive.

sculpt

The two-door, four-seat Audi A5 Coupe's deep, wide stance gives it a muscular, sporty look. LED headlights come standard, offering excellent matrix LED headlights upwards from the S-Series models.

Sporty front and rear bumpers as well as side skirts, matte black rear diffusers and body colourful door handles complete the look.

The car is 4.7 meters long, more than 2 meters wide and more than 1.3 meters high. So, to be fair, it has quite a bit of a road presence, especially its sleek streamlined, dual exhaust pipes, and smart alloy wheels.

Inside, the cabin is upscale, elegant and clean. Showcasing a wealth of technology, the interiors are made of premium leather upholstery, soft-touch surfaces and smart decorative aluminium trims. The panoramic sunroof allows light to flow into the cabin, and the steering wheel and gear lever are decorated in leather.

Ambient lighting and lighting foot pits add to the car's appeal.

Behind the steering wheel

With plenty of manual seat and steering wheel adjustments, finding the perfect driving position behind the wheel of the Audi A5 Coupe is easy. There is also a four-way lumbar support for easy control.

Behind the steering wheel is a 12.3-inch colored digital instrument cluster that can be personalized. When you switch between various driving modes, all important driving data is displayed here and the appearance changes.

The 10.1-inch high-resolution infotainment touchscreen is located at the top of the dashboard, where you can find in-car systems such as Navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB digital radio and perfect tone Bang & Olufsen sound system, which is part of the Comfort and Sound Pack for an additional charge of £1,395.

All climate control settings have a separate panel, which is always good enough to reduce driver distractions, and heated seats help ward off winter melancholy.

You do sit low on the A5 Coupe, but you have a good view ahead and from the side. The wide B-pillar instead obstructs over-the-shoulder visibility, and the car's design, with its tapering roof line, causes the rear windshield to narrow. However, there are plenty of sensors and reversing cameras that can help when parking.

Space and practicality

Due to the nature of its two-door stylish coupe design, this A5 will never be a practical home option. Yes, when the front seats aren't pushed back too far, the rear seats have plenty of room for two passengers and quite a bit of legroom, but that still means climbing over the forward-folding seats to get in and out of the car.

At the front, though, there's plenty of room to stretch out, and the trunk also has a decent storage limit for a 450-litre capacity coupe. In addition, there are many convenient compartments throughout the cabin.

These include a lockable glove box, narrow door pockets, deep trays, a central storage case, cup holders and a wireless charging pad under the front armrest.

Operating costs

The Sport version of the Audi A5 Coupe costs £38,080 and the high-end Vorsprung version costs £56,700. We tested the entry-level A5 Coupe Sport, and after adding some options, its price increased to £42,830.

These include a storage bag (£195), special alloys (£150), panoramic glass skylights (£1,400) and comfort and sound packs (£1,395).

In terms of daily operating costs, our test vehicles are powered by a 2.0-liter petrol engine that delivers 45.6mpg and 141g/km carbon emissions under WLTP testing.

Quality and reliability

When it comes to customer satisfaction surveys, Audi tends to do it near the middle level, but the German manufacturer has a reputation for developing high-quality and reliable cars to drive and run.

Audi's powertrain and transmission have been tested and tested with excellent results, so this 2.0-liter gasoline unit should be able to deliver miles of trouble-free driving

The A5 Coupe's interiors feature premium interiors, soft tactile surfaces and rugged switchgear for quality. There's a thick shift lever, the air conditioner is controlled separately, so you don't have to navigate the touchscreen to adjust the temperature, the touchscreen is a bit prone to dirty fingerprints, but it's easy to wipe clean.

For any car interior, black is always a good color choice. Its appearance may not be so striking, but it is practical.

The car comes with a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty from Audi for added peace of mind.

Safety and security

The latest A5 Coupe received up to five stars when testing its Euro NCAP safety rating, and even our entry-level sports trim models are equipped with a wide range of driver assistance equipment.

These include pre-sense cities that use cameras located on the rearview mirror to detect vehicles and pedestrians in front of the car. If a collision is imminent, the driver is warned, and if the warning is ignored, the car brakes the vehicle in turn. This can work at speeds of up to 52 mph.

Other safety features include cruise control with speed limiter, multiple-impact brake assist and hill hold assist.

These systems are complemented by more standard safety kits such as a pop-up hood for pedestrian protection, an electronic stability control including an anti-lock braking system, an Isofix child seat mount, six airbags, and a comprehensive burglar alarm.
