During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union did everything in order to win, and the KGB, which was established by the Soviet Union in order to prevent the defection of soldiers and obtain secret intelligence, was even more ruthless and resolute in dealing with the defectors, but one of the KGB's colonels, Vitaly Yurchenko, returned to the Soviet Union after defecting to the United States, and the KGB even reinstated him and held a press conference to publicize it.
As a senior official of the KGB, Yurchenko has a lot of intelligence from the Soviet Union, which has always been the focus of the US side's rebellion, but he does not love money, does not love tobacco and alcohol, is loyal and self-disciplined, and it is really difficult to get started.
Traditionally, the reasons for defectors to betray the country were nothing more than revenge, the realization of lofty ambitions, etc., and Yurchenko defected for the simple reason of living a life of abundance and freedom. The Soviet Union did not mistreat him, but as an officer of the KGB, he was to be strict with himself, to obey his duties, and to dedicate himself. There were two direct causes for his defection.
First, he thought he was suffering from cancer and that his time was short. After the doctor's diagnosis, Yurchenko thought that he would not live long, it was better to enjoy life, the Soviet side would certainly not agree to his dereliction of duty, if he surrendered to the United States, it would be different, the United States would think that he had great value, and let him do whatever he wanted, free. This is an important reason why he deviated from his half-life beliefs.
Second, he had a mistress. He wanted to live with his mistress, but the KGB had strict rules, he had a family of his own, he could not stay with his mistress, and he could take her with him after defecting to the United States.
But after he defected to the United States, health checks showed that he was very healthy and cancer-free, and his mistress also refused his request, telling him that he loved the colonel of the KGB and not the traitor to the country. Coupled with the fact that the United States was excited about his defection and hyped up in order to strike at the Soviet Union, and some of the information he provided also severely damaged the Soviet Union, he realized that his value was only like this, which made him very panicked, and the two reasons for defecting to the United States were not valid, then his escape was meaningless. So after a short period of thought, he decided to return to the Soviet Union and use his reasons for being kidnapped by the United States.
The Soviet Union knew the cause of his defection, but thought that he still had some value and could recover the losses of the Soviet Union, so the Soviet side did not punish him, but reinstated him, and held a press conference to solemnly announce that Yurchenko's "trip to the United States" was because the United States had kidnapped Yurchenko and forced him with cruel punishment, and he preferred to die. The US side could not cope and was dumbfounded.
Later, the US media publicized that Yurchenko had been executed by the Soviet Union, and as a result, Yurchenko broke the rumor on television. Some people believe that Yurchenko's defection was a Soviet conspiracy, so as to show that the United States received the defectors in a severe way to warn the Soviet soldiers; or to make it impossible for the United States to accept the defectors and make the defectors impossible to rebel.
Yurchenko was a pawn of both the Soviet Union and the United States, a strategy for war, which fully reflected the intrigue and ruthlessness of the Cold War. Yurchenko's complete return to China and the reinstatement of officials were, in the final analysis, only a strategy used to counter the United States.
