Spring returns to the peak and cliff warmth - the poetic beauty of Guo Xi's "Early Spring Map"
Guo Xi (郭熙), courtesy name Chunfu, was a native of Wen County, Heyang (present-day Mengxian County, Henan), an outstanding landscape painter and painting theorist of the Northern Song Dynasty. In the first year (1067) of emperor Shenzong of Song, he was summoned to the court and appointed as an artist of the Imperial Painting Academy and a hanlin edict. Because the emperor liked his paintings, his inkblots were found in many places in the court. Guo Xi's landscape painter Fa Licheng, mountain stones mostly use "cirrus cloud", and trees often make "crab claw branches".
Guo Xi's masterpiece "Early Spring Map" was created in the fifth year of The Song Dynasty (1072), an ink painting on silk, now in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The picture depicts the scene of spring waking up. Although this "Early Spring Drawing" obviously bears the imprint of the court painting school in the overall style, it does not show Chen Xiangyin like the general court painters, but takes rigorous and fine as the criterion, takes the pen and ink technique as the ability, is not limited to the normative mode, comes out of the studio and actively blends into nature, takes the real mountains and real water as the teacher, borrows things, expresses the true feelings in my heart in the work, and integrates the landscape painting into the poetic and beautiful artistic conception.
1. The ethereal beauty of the picture
The composition of "Early Spring" inherits the panoramic composition since the five generations of Jinghao, the picture is complex, paying attention to the perfect combination of the overall momentum of the picture and the richness of detail. At the same time, it also reflects Guo Xi's unique understanding of the composition of landscape painting, which is a good expression of his "three distances" theory.
2. The erotic beauty of the scene description
A prominent feature of "Early Spring Map" is the successful portrayal of the mountain atmosphere and the subtleties of the sun, so that although the trees in winter are dead branches and have not yet sprouted, they make people truly feel the recovery of all life. There are subtle and vivid characters on the shore, mountain paths and other places, depicted in simple and brief, distributed in different positions of the picture, as if leading the viewer into the mountains, experiencing a "feasible, hopeful, swimworthy, habitable" artistic realm, so that landscape painting adds a strong breath of life, giving people a pleasant and joyful psychological feeling. He once said: "Spring Mountain is light and smiling, Summer Mountain is green and dripping, Autumn Mountain is clear and like makeup, and Winter Mountain is as bleak as sleep." In such a fine way, it is difficult to come up with such an anthropomorphic metaphor without a deep observation and understanding of nature.
3. The poetic beauty of the combination of poetry and painting
The ethereal beauty and the erotic beauty of the scenery expression embodied in the spatial composition of "Early Spring Figure" are the specific expressions of the painters of the Northern Song Dynasty Painting Academy to enhance the poetic beauty of landscape painting, and it is the deepening of the combination of poetry and painting in the Song Dynasty Painting Academy. The way of combining poetry and painting is "poetry is an invisible painting, painting is a tangible poem", as shown in "Early Spring Figure", the painter only inscribed the name of the work and his own name, and did not inscribe the poem on the painting, nor did he paint according to a certain verse, shaping the poetry reflected in the verse, and the combination of poetry and painting at this time has risen to a new height.
Guo Xi's "Early Spring Map" reflects the mutual reference and influence of poetry and painting with poetic and beautiful pictures. As the main force in the painting world, the Song Dynasty Painting Academy has undoubtedly played a greater role in promoting the combination of poetry and painting, and the painters have learned to perceive the landscape with the eyes of the poet, and the aesthetics of nature have been expanded from depth and breadth, thus greatly increasing the realistic connotation of the painting of the Song Dynasty Painting Academy and making it more artistic vitality.

Yang Bing was born in Xi'an in April 1969. He graduated from the Attached High School of Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. In 1993, he graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts with a bachelor's degree in art. He is currently an associate researcher at the Forest of Steles Museum in Xi'an, a calligrapher at the Calligraphy Research Center, an expert in exhibition planning and display design at the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, a co-tutor for postgraduate students at the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, and a visiting scholar at the "The University of The Arts" in Philadelphia, USA (2016). He is mainly engaged in the theoretical research of ancient Chinese art history, contemporary art criticism and practical activities of artistic creation.
