Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has always had deep sympathy for the problems that arise with the public. While he primarily addresses humanity's global problems, he has not forgotten to help solve more pressing, smaller problems, particularly with regard to education.
One such problem is the water supply at Flint School in Michigan, WHERE students and teachers have not been able to access safe and clean drinking water for years. Because excess lead and galvanized iron were found in the school's plumbing system. In addition, in some other educational institution buildings, the chlorine content in the water is not always enough to be completely disinfected. All of this has caused serious problems, and the supply of drinking water has been shut down for the health of students. School administrations are forced to buy and ship bottled water, but this is very expensive.
In October 2018, the Musk Foundation donated $480,000 to install ultraviolet water purification stations for all schools and administrative buildings in Flint. In 2021, comprehensive water quality testing began, which showed that the system was working well and that all buildings could use clean water.
On February 8, 2022, a school in Flint held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the commissioning of the water purification station. Speaking at the ceremony that day, the school director (Kevelin Jones) said: "That means a lot. Water shouldn't be something we have to pay for, because water is a necessity of life. It shouldn't be something we have to fight for. ”
Keveling Jones, chairman of the Board of Education, principal, secretary of the Board of Trustees and a 9th grader took the first sip of drinking water from the purification system as representatives. "It's also important to keep water safe, and more importantly to convince people that water is safe," said Laura Sullivan, a professor of mechanical engineering at Kettering University. She has been working to install these water purification systems since 2016.
"It feels great to have clean water now," said Keveling Jones, who has been providing bottled water to every building for the past six years. Today, Flint School currently uses a total of 136 water purification stations in 12 buildings.
In addition, in December 2018, the Musk Foundation donated $423,600 for the second time as part of an effort to improve secondary education in the region, providing a Google Chromebook to all seventh and eighth graders.
