Pet food is risky and should be carried with caution

Tianjin Xingang Customs seized pet dog food in the luggage of inbound passengers. Zhou Wei, a reporter of this newspaper, took a photo

Not long ago, Tianjin Xingang Customs seized 8 bags of pet dog food, about 150 kilograms, in the middle of two inbound passengers' separate operations. After confirmation, the passengers could not provide the relevant inspection and quarantine certificates, and the Xingang Customs destroyed the above items in accordance with the law.

"Why can't the dog food I bought in supermarkets abroad be brought back to China?" In the face of the passengers' confusion, the customs officer gave an explanation: these pet dog food contain meat ingredients and are animal-derived feed. According to the relevant laws and regulations of China, feed of animal origin needs to be approved by the customs and issued a quarantine certificate from the official agency of the exporting country or region before it can be entered. Feed of animal origin that does not meet the above conditions is prohibited from being carried or mailed into the country.

In recent years, imported pet food has been sought after by many domestic pet lovers, and some people choose to bring food from overseas. However, most of these pet foods contain products or ingredients of animal origin such as meat, fat, and bones, and pet food imported without quarantine may carry and transmit infectious diseases of human, animal or zoonotic diseases.

Customs reminds consumers that most pet food contains ingredients of animal origin, and it is necessary to understand the relevant laws and regulations before carrying or mailing such products to prevent pet food carried or mailed from being returned or destroyed, resulting in unnecessary losses. At the same time, for the sake of national ecological safety and pet health, the majority of pet lovers should improve their safety awareness, do not take chances, and purchase pet food through legal and formal channels.
