"In the last 30 years, the speed of high-performance computing has increased by 500,000 times! Created a thousandfold 'myth' for ten years. I'm proud to be a part of it. Wang Jianbo, general manager of the National Supercomputing Center in Chengdu, believes that in the process of high-quality development of the mainland, the status of computing power is becoming more and more important and irreplaceable.

On October 16, the interview and research delegation walked into Tianfu New Area and conducted in-depth interviews and research at the National Supercomputing Center in Chengdu. The National Supercomputing Center Chengdu, located in Science City in West China (Chengdu), completed the construction of the first phase of the supercomputing system with a peak performance of 170PFlops in September 2020.

Supercomputing, what is it? What is the relationship with high-quality development? How to contribute to the development of economy and society? The questions raised by the delegation were answered in detail by Wang Jianbo.

"Supercomputing is a powerful tool that, combined with other industries, can greatly improve efficiency." Wang Jianbo said that Sichuan is a major manufacturing province and is facing industrial transformation and upgrading, and in the process of digital transformation, it needs a strong "assist" of supercomputing.

Disaster early warning, biomedicine, planetary science... When computing power "meets" with these fields, it becomes a powerful boost. Taking disaster early warning as an example, the Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chengdu Center of National Supercomputing have cooperated to build a mountain disaster risk simulation and danger forecasting platform. On August 23, 2022, the project successfully predicted the cluster debris flow disaster in Liangshan Prefecture, achieving refined forecasting and early warning and "0" casualties.

Taking the industry as an example, supercomputing is a key productivity tool, which can further promote the realization of cost reduction, efficiency improvement and innovative development of industries such as intelligent manufacturing and biomedicine. The Functional Plant Cultivation and Application Innovation Team of the Institute of Urban Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and the Chengdu Supercomputing Center successfully predicted protein structure and interaction with Alphafold2, solving the problem of accurate protein structure prediction and accelerating biological research. The results were successfully published in the international SCI academic journal Froniters in plant science.

It is reported that as of August 2023, the service area of the National Supercomputing Center Chengdu has covered 45 cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, covering nuclear science, aerospace, information technology, artificial intelligence, etc., and has successively provided computing power services for more than 1,100 users such as high-altitude cosmic ray observatories, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Baidu, with a cumulative number of completed operations exceeding 44 million.

As the main chain enterprise in the area, Kanopu Robot started from the welding subdivision and has developed into more than 50 kinds of robots so far.

"Although we now have a complete range of robots, the sales of welding industrial robots still account for more than 50%, and have entered foreign markets." Deng Shihai said that welding is called "industrial tailoring" and has a very large market demand. Its products have been exported to more than 20 countries and regions such as Vietnam and Thailand.

According to the Decision of the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee of the Communist Party of China on Deeply Promoting New Industrialization and Accelerating the Construction of a Modern Industrial System, Sichuan has built a national and even world-class advanced manufacturing cluster and cultivated six trillion-level industries, namely electronic information industry, equipment manufacturing industry, food and textile industry, energy and chemical industry, advanced materials industry, and pharmaceutical and health industry.
