On December 26, the reporter came to the China training base of the furniture making project of the 47th World Skills Competition of Hubei Ecological Engineering Vocational and Technical College. Among the sawdust, Yang Yingjie, a teacher at the school, is making open tenons.

In the final of the 3rd National Industrial Design Vocational Skills Competition held from December 3 to 6, Yang Yingjie designed and produced a leisure chair with a full mortise and tenon structure composed of nearly 30 such open tenons and tenons in 19 hours.
There is not a single nail, all made of mortise and tenon joints. There was not a single gap, not even a single strand of hair, and his outstanding performance amazed the judges.
In order to challenge himself, he deliberately chose an open tenon that is more risky, can meet more, and has a more complex evaluation. With exquisite skills and creative ingenuity, Yang Yingjie finally won the first prize in the staff group of the furniture designer competition.
As a "veteran" who has participated in many world-class and national-level skills competitions, he is well versed in the mystery of the competition: "Joinery projects are meticulously crafted and every minute must be compared, which requires experience and hand precipitation. "In a competition, you can't have an error of more than 0.3 millimeters, but to become the best in the world, you can't have an error of more than 0.15 millimeters, which is thinner than a hair.
Typically, carpenters use scribing lines to define the size, shape and internal structure of furniture.
However, in order to save more time in the competition, Yang Yingjie can only outline the structural strength and modeling beauty of the work in his heart. At the same time, in order to minimize the error, he must achieve the accuracy of the reserved "half line" when cutting, and the error does not exceed 0.15 mm.
"It's a test of cutting skills. Knife chopping, axe chopping, planing, sawing, chiseling, drilling, hammering, filing, etc., are all essential basic skills for our 'carpenters'. Yang Yingjie said that in order to make complex and exquisite furniture, it is not only necessary to have an almost "strict" attitude towards perfection like "detail control", but also to practice solid basic skills.

When he first entered the school, Yang Yingjie practiced Xi Xi sawing wood for 4 months. At that time, the classmates around him felt too boring and left one after another, and in the end, he and another classmate stayed to continue practicing Xi of more than 30 people.
When everyone was playing games, sleeping lazy, and going out to play, he spent almost all day "soaking" in the studio, Xi various basic skills. It was this "ascetic" life that sharpened his mind, cultivated professional skills, and allowed him to be used for the rest of his life.
Later, Yang Yingjie gradually came into contact with a more complex mortise and tenon structure, which was also a greater challenge for him, in order to pursue a stable structure, the size and thickness of the mortise and tenon must be kept perfect-
The mortise scale is too large and easy to loosen, and if it is too small, it cannot be connected, and it must be tightly sealed;
If the tenon is thin, the strength is not enough, which is easy to cause the fracture of the tenon, and if the tenon is thick, the joint eye will be wide, which will affect the structural stability of the building or furniture.
"The mortise and tenon joint is like the joints of the human body, a flexible way of connecting and must be perfectly interlocked. In order to practice the feel of fine hand-over construction, Yang Yingjie Xi has practiced at least five or six hundred times for each common mortise and tenon structure.
When practicing Xi arc-shaped, circular and special-shaped mortise and tenon joint structure, he always couldn't find a suitable production method, resulting in a large gap in the finished product. After carefully studying the structure of mortise and tenon and tenon and processing tools, Yang Yingjie thought of a method to build a datum according to the characteristics of the tool, which ushered in the final success.
Today, Yang Yingjie has also grown from a technical expert to a "gold medal coach". Although he still participates in competitions, he focuses more on training apprentices.
In the past four years, Yang Yingjie has successively guided his apprentices Chang Xiaoyang and Jia Jing to win the first place in the furniture production project of the Hubei Provincial Selection Competition of the National Vocational Skills Competition and entered the national training team, and led Liu Huiting and others to win the provincial gold medal and the national bronze medal in the 8th China International "Internet +" College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition with the "Egg Ten Thousand Years Prison" project.
"Choose one thing for the rest of your life. It is hoped that more young people will inherit traditional handicrafts and pass on the wisdom of ancient Chinese craftsmen such as mortise and tenon structures. Yang Yingjie looked forward to it.
