Moldy sugarcane contains the arthrosporium spp., which produces a highly toxic substance: 3-nitropropionic acid. 3-nitropropionic acid is a mycotoxin that primarily damages the central nervous system and affects the digestive system. What are the symptoms after eating moldy sugarcane?
If you eat moldy sugarcane, once infected with 3-nitropropionic acid poisoning, the onset is acute, the incubation period is as short as 10 minutes, and the long can reach more than 10 hours, there will be vomiting, dizziness, visual impairment, hemistaring, paroxysmal convulsions, stiffening of limbs during convulsions, flexion, internal rotation, chicken claw shape, coma and other acute poisoning symptoms, severe patients are mostly children, severe cases can lead to cerebral ischemia necrosis within 1~3 days of death, survivors often have lifelong disability sequelae.
