According to the data, the retail sales of the domestic narrow passenger car market reached 2.353 million units in December, an increase of 8.5% year-on-year and 13.1% month-on-month, and the cumulative sales from January to December reached 21.703 million units, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%.
The top 10 brands in the wholesale sales list from January to December last year were: BYD, FAW-Volkswagen, Chery Automobile, Geely Automobile, Changan Automobile, SAIC Volkswagen, Great Wall Motor, SAIC-GM, SAIC Passenger Vehicle, and GAC Toyota.
Specifically, among the top three in the list, BYD won the position of annual sales champion for the first time with a cumulative sales volume of 3.01 million units, with an increase of 61.8%. FAW-Volkswagen ranked second, with full-year sales of 1.84 million units in 2023, while Chery's cumulative sales in 2023 reached 1.78 million units, an increase of 55% year-on-year, ranking third.
In addition to FAW-Volkswagen, BYD and Chery are all independent brands, and the top ten in the list have been occupied by domestic independent brands. With the wave of new energy, the domestic automobile industry can be said to have achieved rapid development.
Taking BYD and Chery as examples, the cumulative sales in 2023 will be 3.01 million and 1.78 million respectively, with a year-on-year growth rate of more than 50%, and BYD's growth rate is as high as 61.8%, not only completing the goal set at the beginning of the year, but also ranking ninth in the global automotive industry in the first half of 2023, becoming the first Chinese brand to rank among the top ten in the global automotive industry.
In addition to BYD and Chery, Geely, Changan, and Great Wall, which are also domestic independent brands in the rankings, also performed well, with cumulative sales increasing by double digits year-on-year, and Geely and Changan's annual sales also exceeded 1 million.
In the retail sales rankings of manufacturers, there have been some surprising changes. The top 10 automakers are BYD, FAW-Volkswagen, Geely Automobile, Changan Automobile, SAIC Volkswagen, GAC Toyota, SAIC-GM, Chery Automobile, FAW Toyota, and Great Wall Motor.
Compared with the wholesale sales list, among the top three in the retail sales list, BYD is still firmly at the top of the list, FAW-Volkswagen still maintains the posture of being the second in 10,000 years, but Chery is not only squeezed out of the top three by Geely, but also fell to eighth.
From the changes in the rankings, it can be seen that in the domestic market, Geely and Changan will indeed have more advantages than Chery, but in the overseas market, they belong to Chery's world.
In mid-2023, Chery's overseas sales exceeded 900,000 units, more than half of the total sales. The phenomenon that domestic sales are better than those sold in China has also made Chery an alternative in the domestic auto market.
On the whole, the performance of independent brands in this year is particularly bright, BYD, Geely, Changan and other brands have performed well in the new energy vehicle market. The joint venture brand that has failed to keep up with the pace of new energy development has not performed brilliantly, and if you want to get a better development plan in the future, it depends on whether you can make appropriate adjustments in time.
